The overhead throwing athlete’s shoulder must be stable enough to prevent injury, but unstable enough to allow high levels of torque and rotational velocity. It’s quite a paradox. This athlete is returning to collegiate pitching after having a capsular tightening procedure after a long medical and surgical history. Teaching these athletes to mobilize themselves can be very effective but they must be mature enough to understand the reasoning and have the motor control to get it done independently.

Doing your "band work" is not enough to stay healthy this season.

Little League Shoulder (proximal humeral eipiphysiolysis) is one of the most common injuries to baseball players aged 11-16. The following are mechanical factors that can increase torque on the shoulder and predispose athletes to injury.

1. Altered knee flexion at ball release
2. Early trunk rotation
3. Loss of shoulder rotational range of motion
4. Increased elbow flexion at ball release
5. High pitch velocity
6. Increased pitcher fatigue

5 of these components are modifiable. We can improve athlete's proprioception (joint and position awareness). We can decrease the chance of injury by knowing our body and having awareness of where each joint is in space. THIS CANNOT BE FACILITATED WITH BAND WORK ALONE.

A 2019 publication in the Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine discusses a three year longitudinal study of 12-15 year old little league players.

Researchers took MRI images of 26 players arms before and after baseball season. They had 100% follow up rate for 3 years. Fifteen players (58%) had dominant arm MRI pathology. 80% of MRI findings (12/15 players) were determined to be new or progressive lesions.

In 2 months time we are starting to see major improvements and have the data to track it. First we assessed, then we got a baseline, then we worked. The proof is in the pudding. Train like the best do, Understand why and how "your" body moves, attack areas of weakness and strive for 1% daily growth. This is a hard game to play, but you can be as good as you can imagine yourself to be!
