Back to school stress is normal 🎒

Starting a new school year brings a lot of change. New teachers. New classes. New routines. Even students who are excited can feel nervous.

Some stress is expected. The goal isn't to get rid of it. It's to help kids feel prepared and supported.

A few ways parents can help:

- Keep morning and evening routines consistent.
- Talk about worries without trying to solve everything right away.
- Make time for sleep, meals, and breaks.
- Celebrate effort, not just grades.

If your child seems overwhelmed, anxious, or is having a hard time adjusting after the first few weeks, it may be time to reach out for additional support. You don't have to figure it out alone.

Don't Skip Breakfast (or Lunch!)

The first few weeks of school can bring a mix of excitement and nerves. For some kids and teens, those back-to-school jitters can make it hard to eat breakfast—or even lunch.

When we don't eat, we may have a harder time focusing, staying patient, and managing their emotions. Low blood sugar can also cause headaches, irritability, shakiness, and make anxiety feel more intense.

If your child isn't hungry in the morning, keep it simple. A yogurt, a banana, a piece of toast with peanut butter, or a smoothie is better than nothing. Packing a lunch with a few favorite foods can also make it more likely they'll eat during the school day.

Food is fuel for both the body and the brain. Eating regular meals can help kids feel calmer, think more clearly, and have the energy they need to get through the school day.

If your child is consistently skipping meals because of anxiety, stomachaches, or worries about school, it's worth talking with your pediatrician or mental health provider. Sometimes it's more than just first-day nerves.

😴 Getting Back on a School Sleep Schedule 💤

Summer schedules are fun, but they can make the first week of school a tough adjustment.

If bedtime has slowly gotten later, start making small changes now. Move bedtime and wake-up time earlier by 15 to 30 minutes every few days. A consistent morning wake-up time is often the quickest way to reset your body's clock.

A few other tips:
• Limit screens for about an hour before bed - blue light strongly suppresses the body's natural release of melatonin.
• Keep a regular bedtime routine.
• Avoid caffeine later in the day.
• Get outside in the morning when you can. Natural light helps your body know it's time to be awake.

You don't have to make every change overnight. Small, steady adjustments usually work best.

📚 Back to School Is Almost Here! 📓

The start of a new school year is right around the corner. For many families, that means getting back into routines, adjusting sleep schedules, buying school supplies, and preparing for a busy fall.

A little planning now can make those first few weeks of school feel less stressful. Small changes, like moving bedtime earlier or talking about what to expect, can help kids and teens ease back into the school routine.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing simple tips and helpful information to make the transition a little easier. We'll cover topics like managing stress, resetting sleep schedules, understanding school accommodations, and more.

We hope you'll follow along as we get ready for a great school year. If there's a topic you'd like us to cover, let us know in the comments!

Not every difficult moment has to define the rest of your day.

Our emotions deserve to be acknowledged, not ignored. Take a moment to pause, name what you're feeling, and explore where it's coming from. Then, when you're ready, remind yourself that one setback, one disappointment, or one difficult emotion doesn't have to color everything that follows.

Feel it. Learn from it. Keep moving forward. 💚

Welcome back to Mental Health Monday!

Children and teens do not always have the words to explain what they are feeling.

Sometimes stress shows up as irritability. Anxiety may look like avoidance. Emotional struggles can appear as changes in behavior, sleep, school performance, or relationships.

When a child seems different, curiosity can be more helpful than assumptions.

Simple questions like "How have things been going lately?" or "Is there anything that has been bothering you?" can open the door to meaningful conversations.

Early support can make a lasting difference. We are here to help 💚
