A teenager can understand the lesson… and still lose access to it when they feel watched, rushed, ashamed, overwhelmed or afraid of failing.
That doesn’t automatically mean they’re lazy, defiant or unwilling.
And it doesn’t mean we remove every expectation.
It means the breakdown gives us information.
Where does their nervous system become overwhelmed?
What can they do when they feel safe that becomes inaccessible under pressure?
What smaller experience would help them practice carrying a little more?
The goal isn’t to keep teens comfortable all the time. It’s to help them stay engaged with manageable frustration, uncertainty, imperfection and vulnerability… while supported enough to keep going.
Understanding can happen in a conversation.
Capacity is built through practicing taking one more step in a safe supportive environment.
Save this for the next time a teen says, “I know,” and still cannot move.
