Too many men were taught to hide what they feel instead of learning how to understand it. But suppressing emotions doesn’t make you stronger—it often makes the pain louder.

Real strength is found in self-awareness, emotional discipline, and the courage to heal.

Keep Thriving.

Saturday mornings look a little different around here. ☕

I’m in the office today because healing doesn’t have to wait until Monday. Thrive Counseling and Consulting Services offers Saturday appointments for those who need more flexible scheduling.

If you’ve been putting off therapy because life is busy, this may be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

🌿 Help Us Welcome Our New Counseling Intern, Alisha “AJ” Jones! 🌿

Thrive Counseling and Consulting Services is excited to welcome Alisha Jones, affectionately known as AJ, to our team as a counseling intern.

AJ is currently pursuing her education through Grand Canyon University. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Studies and is working toward her Master’s degree in Addiction Counseling.

AJ chose the field of addiction counseling because she believes everyone deserves to have someone in their corner.

In her words:

“Everyone needs someone to be there for them. If I can be that one person who helps someone become better, then I have succeeded in life.”

AJ is also passionate about setting an example for her children. By continuing her education, she hopes to show them that with commitment, hard work, and determination, they can achieve their goals.

Outside of her professional and educational pursuits, AJ enjoys hunting, fishing, reading, and spending quality time with her husband of six years and her children. She values creating meaningful memories with her family.

We are grateful to have AJ completing her clinical training with Thrive Counseling and Consulting Services and look forward to supporting her professional growth as she serves individuals and families in our community.

Please join us in welcoming AJ to the Thrive family!

This statistic stopped me in my tracks.

As a Black male therapist, I spend a lot of time talking about depression, trauma, stress, and emotional pain. What concerns me is that too many of our young Black men are suffering in silence.

These aren’t just numbers. These are our sons, brothers, nephews, students, friends, and neighbors.

We have to do a better job of creating spaces where Black men can be honest about what they’re carrying without fear of judgment. Being strong should not mean suffering alone.

Check on the Black men in your life. Have the conversation. Listen without trying to fix everything. Sometimes knowing someone cares can make all the difference.

Let’s keep talking about mental health. Lives depend on it.

June is Men’s Health Month — a time to bring awareness to the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of men and boys.

At Thrive Counseling and Consulting Services, iTHRIVE, and Thrive Talks, we believe men deserve safe spaces to heal, grow, express emotions, and seek support without judgment.

Too often, men are taught to suffer in silence.
To “man up.”
To suppress emotions.
To carry pain privately.

But healing is strength.
Asking for help is strength.
Having honest conversations is strength.

This month, we encourage men to:
• Prioritize their mental health
• Check in emotionally
• Normalize therapy and support
• Build healthy coping skills
• Break generational cycles of silence and stigma

We especially recognize the importance of supporting Black men and young boys whose mental health experiences are often overlooked or misunderstood.

Your life matters.
Your voice matters.
Your healing matters.

It’s not always obvious.

Sometimes it looks like:
– Low motivation
– Irritability
– Feeling mentally drained
– Disconnecting from people
– Just trying to get through the day

That’s not something you have to ignore or “push through.”

With the right support, you can regain clarity, stabilize your emotions, and start feeling like yourself again.

This is more than talking—it’s structured, intentional work toward real change.
