Join me for a Death Cafe hosted by Home Healthcare, Hospice & Community Services - HCS at their Keene location on Tuesday, April 14th at 5:30pm.

As an end-of-life doula, one of the things I’ve learned from sitting with the dying and their loved ones, is that we are profoundly underprepared for one of life’s most certain events. Not because we aren’t capable, but because we simply don’t talk about it.

Death Cafes exist to change that. They bring together people who share a curiosity about mortality and create a space where that curiosity is genuinely welcome. These gatherings have a way of being surprisingly life-affirming. After all, talking about death won’t kill you.

A Death Cafe is a welcoming gathering where people come together to drink tea or coffee, enjoy cake, and talk openly about death. The goal is to increase awareness of death to help people make the most of their (finite) lives.

This week is National Grief Awareness Week.

Grief has no timeline. It changes us, it moves with us, and it becomes part of who we are. There is nothing wrong with still missing someone, whether a month has passed or many years.

Alan D. Wolfelt, Ph.D., writes in The Wilderness of Grief:

“My grief journey has no one destination. I will not ‘get over it.’ The understanding that I don’t have to be done is liberating. I will mourn this death for the rest of my life.”

These words speak to a truth many carry quietly. Grief does not ask us to forget. It becomes a companion that shifts over time, leaving us with the love, the memories, and the ways someone’s presence continues to shape our lives.
