POST 2 of 3: Dining Out With Dementia
Taking a loved one with dementia out to eat? A few things may look different β€” and that's okay.
They may eat more slowly, or feel unsure about cutlery and prefer fingers. They may want just one simple thing, like a bowl of soup β€” one spoon, nothing complicated.
None of this is a step backward. It's just a different way of enjoying a meal together.

POST 1 of 3: When Taste Changes
Your loved one won't touch a food they used to love. Are they just being difficult?
No β€” it's the dementia talking, not them. The brain processes taste and texture differently now. A once-favorite flavor can suddenly taste off. A familiar texture can feel all wrong. Even cutlery can become confusing β€” a fork with too many decisions to make. Sometimes finger food, or just a spoon, is easier.
Understanding what's happening at the table is the first step to making mealtime easier β€” and more joyful. This week, Madonna Heritage Assisted Living is sharing a 3-part series on food and dementia. Next up: what dining out really looks like now.

Care that feels like Family
A hand reaching for yours. A smile that lingers half a second longer. Humming along to a song from decades ago. Eye contact that says "I know you," even without the words to prove it.
Dementia changes how connection shows up β€” but it doesn't take it away.
These moments don't wait for a good time. They show up mid-hallway, mid-lunch, mid-quiet afternoon.
Being intentional isn't about making them happen. It's about noticing β€” and staying in it a few extra seconds.
That's something we practice every day at Madonna Heritage, with every resident, in the small moments as much as the big ones.
If you're caring for someone with dementia at home, try catching just one small moment today. That's enough!

"I'm fine. There's nothing wrong with me."

If you've heard this from a loved one with dementia, here's something that might bring you peace: it's not denial. It's not stubbornness.

It's called Anosognosia β€” a real brain change that stops someone from recognizing their own memory loss. To them, everything genuinely feels normal. That's why arguing rarely helps. You're not working against their attitude β€” you're working against a brain that literally can't see what you see.

At Madonna Heritage, our caregivers meet families right where this reality lives β€” with patience and redirection, not correction.

"Please don't put me in one of those places."
That's what my mom said to me after she broke her hip. Because of the fall, she could no longer stay in independent living β€” she'd have to "graduate" up the hill, into assisted living. To her, that wasn't a new chapter. It felt like the end of one.
What changed everything was a visit she wasn't expecting. The owner of Madonna Heritage came to see her in the hospital β€” in person β€” and asked if she'd come live there instead.
She said yes to her. Not to the idea of assisted living.
She became part of a community where she was still herself β€” sewing, laughing, making things with her hands. Still my mom!

Have you noticed Mom or Dad avoiding the shower lately?
It's a quiet sign families often miss β€” skipping baths, wearing the same clothes for days, or seeming unsteady in the bathroom. It doesn't mean anything's wrong. It usually just means a little extra support is needed.
At Madonna Heritage, we help residents with bathing and hygiene the same way we'd want it done for our own parents β€” with patience, warmth, and respect for their dignity and independence.
If you're worried about a loved one, you don't have to figure it out alone. We'd love to just talk it through with you. πŸ’› Call us anytime.
