September is National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. In 2024, Alabama lost 837 people to su***de, a rate of 16.2 per 100,000. Behind every one of those numbers is a family, a circle of friends, a workplace, a church, a school and a community that has felt the impact of that loss.
This month and every month, we encourage you to have the conversations that may feel difficult. Check in on the people you love. Ask how they’re really doing and take the time to listen without judgment. Remind them that they matter, they are not alone and asking for help is a sign of strength. Remember, the same applies to you! You don’t have to wait until things feel unbearable to reach out for support.
If you or someone you love is struggling or experiencing a mental health crisis, CALL OR TEXT 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. Help is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
You never know what someone may be carrying behind closed doors. A conversation, a phone call, a text or simply showing someone you care can make a difference. Together, we can reduce stigma, make support more visible and remind every Alabamian that hope and help are available.
