Working on catching and throwing is about more than just a game—it’s building important skills like engagement with others, attention, coordination, and communication!

Sometimes, catch-and-throw play can be tricky at first, so we break it down into smaller, easier steps to help set kids up for success:

✨ We may start by focusing just on catching
✨ Then add support for throwing (sometimes with hand-over-hand help)
✨ Next, we work on throwing toward a target with cues
✨ Then practice catching while also remembering to throw back
✨ Finally, we put it all together for back-and-forth play with a partner

Breaking the activity into steps helps build confidence, reduce frustration, and supports successful play with others. 💛

During speech therapy, we often incorporate language opportunities into feeding activities by using spoken words, signs, gestures, and AAC to help children communicate while exploring foods.

We may work on:
✨ Requesting “more,” “eat,” or “drink”
✨ Commenting like “yummy,” “cold,” or “all done”
✨ Making choices between foods
✨ Describing textures, colors, or tastes
✨ Increasing participation and engagement during mealtimes

Pairing communication with motivating, meaningful activities like eating helps children learn that communication has power! 💛

Every bite can become an opportunity for connection, interaction, and language growth. 😊

Using AAC during motivating activities helps communication come to life! 💬✨

One of our kiddos worked on requesting “GO” while swinging using their AAC device. Pairing movement and play with communication helps build understanding that words have power and can help get wants and needs met. 🎢💛

Activities like swinging can create exciting opportunities to practice:
⭐ Requesting
⭐ Turn-taking
⭐ Joint attention
⭐ Communication initiation
⭐ Cause-and-effect understanding

Play is powerful, and communication can happen anywhere! 😊
