DID YOU KNOW?
Trauma physically alters the brain's wiring by shrinking the logical thinking center and causing the threat detector to grow hyperactive. This structural shift traps the nervous system in a "survival loop," where it treats everyday, harmless cues as immediate life-or-death dangers.

Amygdala Hijack: The brain's alarm systemโ€”the amygdalaโ€”becomes physically hyperactive. It stays stuck in the "on" position, flooding the body with survival hormones even when completely safe.

Prefrontal Cortex Shrinkage: The logical part of the brain responsible for reasoning, language, and emotional control actually loses gray matter volume. This makes it incredibly difficult for the brain to apply logic to override false danger signals.

Time Disconnection: Trauma disrupts the hippocampus, which indexes memories with time stamps. Because the hippocampus shrinks and underperforms under chronic stress, traumatic memories are stored as fragmented, raw sensory details. When triggered, the brain cannot differentiate between a past memory and a present threat, making flashbacks feel entirely real.

Joy Dampening: The continuous flood of stress chemicals can dull the brain's reward networks. This often leads to anhedoniaโ€”a trauma response where the brain temporarily loses its capacity to process dopamine, making previous hobbies feel flat or unexciting.

DID YOU KNOW?

Mental health conditions are highly common, affecting about 1 in 5 U.S. adults. Despite this, over 28 million Americans with mental illness do not receive treatment, often due to high costs or stigma.

Key facts about mental health:
* Brain impact: Prolonged stress and untreated mental illnesses cause the body to continuously produce cortisol, which can physically alter brain structure and shrink areas like the hippocampus over time.

* Demographics: Depressive and anxiety disorders are about 50% more common in women than in men, though men die by su***de at a rate nearly 4 times higher than women.

* Early signs: Symptoms often start young. Up to 20% of youth have a diagnosed mental or behavioral health condition.
