Sometimes the habits that make the biggest difference are the smallest ones.

A patient came in recently and pulled something out of her purse that I loved. It was hearing protection! She told me, “In the summer, I carry these with me like I do my sunglasses.” 🥹👏👏👏

I thought that was such a great way to look at it. We are all so used to protecting our eyes without even thinking twice, but we do not always treat our hearing the same way.

She shared that she learned this the hard way. She went to a concert in her 30s without hearing protection, and afterward her ears started ringing. She said, “It never fully went away. It comes and goes, but it is always there.”

I hear stories like that more often than you would think. I think a lot of us assume “it will be fine” in those situations, until it isn’t. Once that ringing starts, it can be really frustrating to manage. 😣

The win here is awareness. Now she is proactive, prepared, and protecting her hearing in situations she knows could be loud.

It is such a simple habit, but it makes a big difference over time. If you are heading into concerts, festivals, or any loud summer events, bring hearing protection along. Future you will be grateful.

If you’re a patient of mine, you have probably heard me say this a million times. 😂

We don’t just listen with our ears; our brains play a major role in how we understand speech! 🧠

Hearing is not only about detecting sound, but about how the brain processes and makes sense of it.

As part of a comprehensive hearing evaluation, we often include word recognition testing. This allows us to assess higher-level auditory processing and better understand how your brain interprets incoming sounds, especially in real-world listening situations.

This information helps us make the most appropriate and personalized treatment recommendations.

And now you know! 💡✨

The World Health Organization (WHO) has a 2026 mission: “From Communities to Classrooms.” It’s a reminder that the best way to help a child succeed in school is to catch hearing issues before they get back to their desks. 👦👩

Why summer? Because the pressure is off. No homework, no missed classes, just a great time to get a baseline screening and ensure they are ready for the fall.

If you noticed your child "tuning out" or saying "what?" a lot during the spring semester, don’t wait until August to find out why. Let’s use this quiet season to make sure they head back to school with total confidence.

My door is open, and the clinic is cool. Let’s make it a summer of better hearing! 🍦👂

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, a time to highlight the important connection between hearing and cognition. 💜 Millions of individuals and families are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Awareness, early identification, and supportive care play a key role in improving quality of life. Understanding how hearing health fits into brain health is one way we can better support our loved ones!

Do you know someone in your life who needs to schedule that hearing screening? 🤔

As Better Speech and Hearing Month comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the conversations I have with patients every day.

So often, people tell me they thought others were just mumbling, or that crowded places had somehow gotten harder. In reality, even small changes in hearing can make communication feel more exhausting than it used to.

One of the things I care most about is helping people understand that hearing well isn’t just about volume — it’s about staying connected, feeling confident in conversations, and being fully present in your life.

If there’s one takeaway from this month, it’s this: pay attention to the small signs 👉 asking people to repeat themselves, feeling worn out after social events, or noticing that speech doesn’t sound as clear as it once did.

Awareness is the first step.

Better hearing can feel a lot like finally stepping into the sunlight after a cloudy day. ☀️

As an audiologist, one of the more common things I help patients with is something people don’t always think much about is earwax!!

I completely understand the temptation to try to manage it at home. 🙅‍♀️ But the reality is, the ear is a delicate space, and it’s very easy to push wax deeper, cause irritation, or even risk damage without realizing it.

What many people don’t know is that ear wax management is actually part of our clinical training.

When I remove earwax in the office, I’m able to clearly see the ear canal and eardrum using specialized equipment, which allows me to do it safely and comfortably. Just as importantly, I can also check for anything else that might be contributing to changes in hearing. 👂

I always tell patients, it’s not just about removing wax, it’s about understanding what’s going on in your ears and making sure everything looks healthy.

Sometimes the safest, easiest solution is having it handled by someone who does it every day.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage and dedication are the reason we enjoy the freedoms of everyday life! ❤️🤍💙

As we gather with family and friends this long weekend, we do so with gratitude and reflection. It’s a time to both remember those who served and appreciate the moments we’re able to share because of them.

Wishing everyone a safe, meaningful, and restful Memorial Day!

It’s common for people to notice their voices sound different when they’re first fitted with hearing aids. This happens because your brain is hearing sounds it may have missed before.

A helpful tip is to read aloud for a few minutes each day. This allows your brain to adjust more quickly and comfortably. With consistent wear, your voice will sound more natural again.

Small steps like this can make the transition smoother and more enjoyable.

“The smallest hearing aid must be the best option.” 👂💡

It’s easy to assume smaller hearing aids are always better, but that isn’t always true. Very small devices have limited space for features, power, and speakers, making them less effective for certain hearing losses.

The best hearing aid balances comfort, performance, and your listening needs. Larger styles can still be discreet while offering better clarity and advanced technology.

Function should always come first.
