Shout out to Rick & Nita!

Where to start... Rick & Nita are loving parents of 3 entertaining, consistent & humorous boys diagnosed with autism. Wait... before you say oo my that is tough or feel sorry for them, pump your breaks...

Yes, having 3 boys with autism is unusual & unique but just because a person's cards are different than yours does not mean it is not a good hand. It's all about what you chose to do with those cards...

Rick & Nita had to be creative, dedicated, resourceful & persistent to be the advocates their boys needed. Yes, there were more obstacles in the way for them as a couple & family but they stuck together and have become some amazing, thoughtful & caring humans.

I believe this quote Nita sent me hits the nail on the head. It is a great representation of who they are: grounded, consistent & supportive parents, people & human beings who love well. Their insight & perspective is a rare, warming & refreshing.

Rick & Nita are great role models & people who we all strive to be like... Better human beings who want to support the people we love.

Down syndrome, Autism, ADHD, Cancer, Cerebral Palsy and other diagnosis we give people are essentially labels to help categorize people. Labels do serve a purpose in certain settings however, I do believe we can decide what that label means to us and how we want to approach those people.

Different is not bad, but it can be scary if you CHOSE to view it as a bad or scary thing. I believe different should spark Curiosity.

CHALLENGE: Ask yourself- How do I respond to different?

It was Challenge Day at Bradford Woods. A girl named Catie asked me to buddy climb with her to help her conquer the alpine tower, so of course I said yes.

As we headed down to this 60 foot high structure, I remember thinking, there is no way she is leaving here without making it to the top. The climb took over 2 hours of her and I being stretched over the obstacles.

Once we get to the top I remember having this, spiritual/goosebump feeling as the sun was setting and Catie and I let out a victorious roar that shook the valley. I knew then I wanted this to be a part of my life in some way.

Thanks for that experience Catie Cox!!

Bradford Woods, where my interest in ALL abilities started!

The first week was kids rocking that extra love chromosome, which some people label Down Syndrome. I remember the genuine friendships and the desire to just be a kid. The amount of energy, controlled chaos and freedom in those dance parties and cabin times.

I will never forget that climbing tower and seeing kids make remarkable discoveries about themselves on each Challenge day. Truly a remarkable place!β˜€οΈπŸ•Ί
