August comes to an end soon and most youth are returning (or already have) to schools. Parents, your job is actually the hardest- model appropriate ethical/moral development; support, promote and reinforce educational growth at home. Enable the child to be accountable to ALL OF THEIR OWN behaviors. Enable accountability-don't entitle or excuse acceptance of consequences they may face for bad decisions. Real life is not enabled, its earned- good -bad-indifferent.
True confidence and resilience are built through accountability, not protection from consequences.

As promised in June- Coping before healing:
You cannot heal if you are completely overwhelmed, meaning healthy coping skills are required first to build the emotional safety needed to tackle deeper issues. There are four primary types of coping and I’d suggest working these with seasoned mental health professionals.
1. Problem-focused: Actively addressing or removing the stressor. (ie-boundaries et al)
2. Emotion-focused: Managing the negative feelings associated with stress. Reframing cognitively.
3. Meaning-focused: Finding positive lessons or significance in the situation. What can you take from the experience, impactive and/or enhance your life going forward.
4. Social coping: Seeking practical or emotional support from others- and others means HEALTHY others. If you seek someone to share with whom also has mental health challenges, you are perpetuating your own issues.

The "unhealthiest" coping mechanism is generally agreed to be avoidance combined with substance abuse. While these offer immediate temporary relief, they ultimately worsen the underlying distress, prevent emotional processing, and create severe long-term physical, social, and psychological consequences. When you wish to safely and healthily heal…consider the role appropriate, researched backed coping skills offer first.

Thanks for reading along, now back to your regularly scheduled programs. ;0)

Trauma- the word has many connotations. A pattern we are seeing is the use of the word when trying to acknowledge stressors, life events that occur daily-that's not trauma- it requires self care and coping.
It's positive that the population is at least removing the stigma from the word trauma, but social media has also increased acceptance into everyday lexicon. ie "I can't go to the grocery store, it's too traumatic for me"- why is it traumatic?- "It's way too loud and too many people". That's not trauma-it could be social avoidance or a potential other issue (possible event in the past) but we are seeing the overuse of the word. Trauma is basically an event or events that literally shatter a sense of safety and overwhelm the individuals ability to cope. For the many veterans I have seen, folks involved in accidents or other life altering events ,those who have been exposed to multiple varied life events as a child, trauma is a serious issue and hypervigilence is a barrier to a fulfilling life.
Before someone says "My trauma(s) please ask yourself is it truly traumatic and a response to such?
The next topic- "healing" we often don't hear- COPING instead.
Thank you for reading.

Did you know that by end of January 43% of all people who take on a New Year Resolution-fail, drop, stop trying. The #1 reason? "Don't have the time". That means there wasn't a SMART goal. We can help with that. Some open sessions now, message me for details.
