Please help us spread the word!

After several decades of offering Thorne products to our patients and patrons, it is with great sadness we announce they will no longer be available at our location.

As many of you are aware, we have been slowly phasing them out since the sale to Health Tech, Inc. The sale to L. Catterton (private equity firm) in 2023 saw increased pricing and less satisfaction.

With the announcement Thorne has sold again, this time to Proctor & Gamble, we can no longer offer these products in good faith to our cliental.

It is our intention to eliminate stock from our shelves in the next 30 days. We are offering the opportunity for you to "stock up" by calling the office and placing an order. At the end of 30 days this option will no longer be available as we will cut ties with Thorne.

We are working on replacements for the few items left to shift from Thorne to another reputable practitioner only company. Quality of product is needed for health improvements.

Contact us at 573-893-9999 or via email. [email protected] Thank you.

Spices for Health —Rosemary

With the wet hot weather this year, many people are seeing an overabundance of garden herbs. In folk medicine, it was believed these seasons of tremendous yields prepared for season filled with a variety of illness concerns. Other account simply believe these optimal years make up for the leaner times. Whatever the case may be, Rosemary offers a wealth of health boosting properties. It may be used in cooking or brewed as a tisane.

Native to the Mediterranean, Rosemary is a flavorful, easy-grown herb. Normally, it is used sparingly in culinary dishes as the strong woodsy flavor can overpower other ingredients. It is a welcomed addition to poultry and savory meat dishes. Rosemary is well documented as being utilized for healing purposes in ayurvedic health practices. So, what are a few of Rosemary’s additions to the healing processes.

Both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties are found in this herb. The main compounds rosmaric acid and carnosic acid provide the much-needed inflammation reduction in the body. Research has indicated substantial inflammation reduction in the body. Antioxidants help protect the body against chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and reduce cancer risks.

In addition, research has shown rosemary can improve cognitive function in older adults. Rosmarinus officinalis has long been known as the herb of remembrance. In early stages, mild cognitive impairments don’t show physical signs of deficit. As time progresses, so does loss of cognition and physical abilities. Studies have shown cognitive improvements in elderly using inhalation. Likewise, ingesting rosemary tea has shown benefit as well.

Also, multiple studies have shown the compounds in rosemary can help reduce feelings of stress. Moreover, it also has the ability to promote calmness. Drinking a cup of tea or diffusing rosemary oil can decrease stress in daily life.

How to use Rosemary
1). Add to savory dishes. Or add to a marinade meat or poultry. Sprinkle on vegetables before roasting.

2). Aromatherapy. Diffuse rosemary can help to clear your mind and improve mental focus.

3). Brew a Tea. Add fresh or dried rosemary leaves to a tea infuser, add boiling water, and allow the tea to brew for at least 5 minutes. Or blend with other tasty herbs such as mints.

4). Rinse brunette hair with rosemary infusion to brighten shine and add softness.

Rosemary can be a health asset when added to the diet or lifestyle habits!

Smoke by any Name

There are times we are unable to avoid smoke. A shifting breeze at a bonfire. A wind swirl while burning brush. Overheated oil. Chemical smokes, Exposure to to***co smoke. And yes, even that neighbor that decides to burn old tires. Most often the greatest concerns are wood or wildfire smoke. When exposure occurs, there may be assistance to desensitize the body’s reactions.

Beyond the immediate danger of the flames, the smoke and pollutants released during fires create low air quality that can have far-reaching health consequences. Smoke generated by fires contains toxic substances, including particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and hazardous air pollutants. When inhaled, these pollutants can pe*****te deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, leading to a range of health issues:

In the respiratory system, fine particles in wildfire smoke (PM2.5) can irritate the lungs, trigger inflammation, and impair lung function. Prolonged exposure to PM2.5 can increase the risk of respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, asthma exacerbation, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Unfortunately, chemical components in smoke can enter the bloodstream and cause inflammation, oxidative stress, and blood clotting – leading to serious cardiovascular health issues, particularly in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions.

Additionally, mental & emotional states are also impacted. Poor air quality and the heightened risk of wildfires can lead to increased stress, anxiousness, and poor sleep.

Beyond respiratory and cardiovascular complications, low air quality caused by wildfires (and other types of fire) can contribute to eye and throat irritation, headaches, fatigue, and worsened allergies. It can also increase the susceptibility to respiratory infections and worsen the symptoms of existing health conditions.

Smoke, from any type of fire, when inhaled should be taken seriously. Extended exposure can have long-term health effects. For short-term exposure, there are various methods to help clear and desensitize the impact. Please consult a knowledgeable practitioner vs utilizing social media & internet suggestions. Homeopathic and herbal approaches when personalized may be beneficial for minimized exposures.*

Heart, Thyroid, Cognition & More! The Iodine Connection

In recent decades, we have seen a steady lowering of sodium (salt) to promote a heart healthier diet. However, many of the things we give up striving for greater health may be contributing to harming other areas. One of those is the iodine connection to thyroid function. Prior to the 1920s and the widespread availability of iodized salt, sections of the country were referred to as the “goiter belt.” Lack of iodine severely impairs thyroid function.

Fast forward to a time of increased blood pressure contributing to the rise in heart disease and we see a shift to reducing salt intakes (and some foods) to limit risks for developing heart disease. Ironically, at the same time we begin to see a rise in thyroid conditions. Please keep in mind iodine is only one of the nutrients needed for a healthy thyroid, but a rather important one.

While dairy products do contain iodine, the plant-based alternatives do not. As many people adopt a dairy-free diet another source of iodine is eliminated. Likewise, the popularity of Himalayan salt has also reduced iodine intake. While it naturally contains trace amounts, it is not enough to sustain thyroid function. Furthermore, the amount of iodine in fruits and vegetables varies depending on the soil's iodine content.

As we move away from processed foods to improve heart and other health functions, we also loose sources of added iodine. For example, plant-based diets have the potential to be low in iodine. Additionally, it is estimated between 1-3 million people are using some version of the Paleo diet. A two-year study found that a paleo diet results in a higher risk of developing an iodine deficiency when compared with a more varied diet,

So where to find the iodine? Seaweed, including kelp, nori, kombu, and wakame, are some of the best food sources of iodine. Unfortunately, the content is highly variable per serving. A 3-oz serving of cod contains almost 100 mcg iodine. Grains and dairy remain sources of iodine as well. A variety of fish and beans also contain iodine. Let us not overlook eggs, seafood, and enriched foods.

Lack of iodine can contribute to a multitude of health issues. Including cognitive decline. Research has found impaired neurodevelopment in children with iodine deficiency. Likewise, deficiency also affects the aging population. Furthermore, iodine deficiency has also been connected to effects on glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, and obesity. And yes, thyroid dysfunction.

However, over supplementing also causes health issues. Please note many iodine supplements negatively interact with prescription drugs. Recommended daily intake of iodine varies by age ranging from 90 to 290 mcg daily. Considering a banana contains 3mg eating a varied diet containing multiple sources of iodine is essential.

When using an iodine supplement, it is important to first document iodine deficiency. Levels of iodine within the body will directly correlate to amount of supplementation needed. In general, a recommended 150 mcg of potassium iodide is usually sufficient for adults. Again, contact a knowledgeable health practitioner for proper guidance to avoid negative health results.

Vagus Nerve—Quick Approaches

Did you know it is possible to quickly lower cortisol and the “fight or flight” response in your body? Try these simple steps.

1). Splash cold water on your face. Make sure it targets cheeks, eyes, and forehead. Spend 15-30 seconds with this cold water splash.

2). Need extreme response? Dip your face in a bowl of iced water. This is effective to promote a fast cortisol drop reducing your stress response.

3). Use a cold cloth over the face to achieve the same response without water application. (works well and does not affect make-up.

4). Use ice pack on the back of your neck. This disrupts the acute anxiety, panic, and /or stress.

5). Finish your shower with a blast of cold water. It can lead to more restful slumber at night.

There are many more self-help techniques to be covered in another post. The water approach is a quick response for acute use. So when you begin to feel the stress levels start to rise—stop it before it becomes a more serious problem!
