For my boys, it was never optional.

People sometimes ask me, "Why would you adjust a baby that young?" Because birth is hard on a baby's body, even when it goes exactly as planned. Within hours of being born, every one of my boys was adjusted. Not because something was "wrong," but because I wasn't willing to wait and find out.

My oldest had a prolonged labor. Hours and hours of his little body being squeezed before he ever took a breath.

My middle son was born with his cord wrapped around him.

And my youngest, his birth involved a manual assist I hadn't asked for and didn't consent to. It was done without my knowledge. That one is still hard for me to write about.

Three completely different births. Three completely different kinds of stress on their tiny spines and nervous systems. One thing every single one of them had in common: within a few hours, they were adjusted. Not eventually. Not "when we had time." It was never optional.

Not because I think birth is dangerous or something to fear. Because I know what that first journey into the world asks of a baby's body, and I wasn't going to leave that unchecked, not for my own boys, and not for anyone else's.

Every birth is different. But every baby deserves to be checked.
