We can't think of a better way to wrap up summer vacation than the annual Blue Ridge Brutal. While our team may not have racked up miles pedaling a bike, we made sure the nearly 240 70-and-100-mile riders were hydrated and fueled for the trip back to Jefferson from Piney Creek Elementary School. We saw returning riders from Charlotte and Raleigh and several riders from Florida who were up enjoying the ride for the first time. Thank you to all of our volunteers who helped make the day a success!

Yesterday we celebrated the dedication of the Kurtz Family Labyrinth Garden at Ashe Memorial Hospital. This beautiful project was born through the creativity and vision of Revs. Dr. Michael and Karen Kurtz in memory of Dr. Elam and Orpah Kurtz. It's designed as a place of peace, reflection, remembrance and renewal for our patients, families, team members, and community.

So what is a labyrinth? Unlike a puzzle maze with dead ends, a true labyrinth has just one single path that leads to the center and back out, meaning you cannot get lost inside it. The simple act of walking the path can provide an opportunity to slow down, clear the mind, reflect, pray, or simply enjoy a few quiet moments. The garden also incorporates a stone wall where you can simply sit and enjoy a stunning view of Mount Jefferson.

A special Thank You to Mike Schwartz at Third Day Landscaping for overseeing the project and bringing it to life and to the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce for supporting this event. We hope the community will take the time to walk and enjoy this reflective space!

Our annual Camp Med Summer Program is one of our favorite weeks of the year. We love being able to give our local high school students the opportunity to explore the world of healthcare through a variety of events and activities. This year's camp, which was held July 13-17, was absolutely jam-packed with activities, including job shadowing, visits from our friends at Ashe Medics, Inc and AirCare, learning assessment skills like manual blood pressures and identifying different lung sounds, presentations from our Rehab Services, Respiratory, Surgical Services and Oncology departments, a day at Atrium Health/Baptist Hospital learning all about Pathology, and a certification class in Stop The Bleed and Trauma Response.

We had an awesome group of kids this year who were all eager to learn everything they could about healthcare and walked away with additional knowledge and insight into potential career pathways. We're already looking forward to next year!
