Even the Uber Eats robots are still sleeping when I head home from work. šš¤š¤
But what exactly have I been doing all night?
Yes, one of my jobs as an overnight postpartum doula is caring for your baby so you can get some much-needed sleep.
But itās also SO much more than that.
𤱠As a lactation counselor, I can help with latch and positioning, troubleshoot feeding challenges, support pumping when the time is right, and help figure out when something needs a referral.
š¶ I teach newborn care ā bathing, swaddling, diapering, paced bottle feeding, taking a temperature, trimming those impossibly tiny fingernails ā and reassure you about all those completely normal newborn things that can seem alarming at 2 a.m.
ā¤ļø I take care of Mom, too. That might mean making sure she eats and drinks, stays on top of medications, gets a hot shower or sitz bath, and ā most importantly ā gets REST while her body recovers from pregnancy and birth.
š¼ I wash and sterilize bottles and pump parts, organize the nursery and feeding supplies, and help create systems that make life with a newborn a little easier.
š” And after 15 years of working with new families, I have LOTS of tricks up my sleeve ā from the swaddle that can contain your tiny Houdini to wearable pumps, baby carriers and all the little products and solutions that can make a surprisingly big difference.
But maybe the most important part of my job?
Teaching parents to do all of this without me.
Because eventually Grandma goes home. Your partner goes back to work. You want to leave the house with the baby without packing like youāre crossing the Atlantic. And one day, I work my last overnight.
My goal isnāt for you to need me forever.
Itās for you to get some sleep, recover, learn your baby, and become confident enough to say:
āWeāve got this.ā ā¤ļø
And then I head homeā¦apparently before the robots wake up. š
