If you're a woman and you find yourself frequently confused by health and fitness recommendations made on social media, it may be best for you to move on and look elsewhere for guidance. According to a recently published study, four claims commonly seen online about fasted training, hydration requirements, carbohydrates and protein timing were not supported by the medical literature, meaning that many women could be getting misled by inaccurate information.

Women should ignore most of the exercise advice they see on social media, University of Otago – Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka researchers say.

Do you check your "sleep score" the first thing every morning and find yourself obsessing over the number of hours you get and your accumulated "sleep debt?" While tracking your sleeping habits and consistently aiming for a certain score can be beneficial to your overall health, there are also some potential downsides to consider.

Never seem to get enough sleep? Why chasing ‘enough sleep’ to repay your ‘sleep debt’ might not be helping.

Do you catch yourself checking your smart watch to see if you've "closed the rings" more times than you can count every day? While fitness trackers and smartwatches certainly motivate people to move more, they also have the potential to dominate one's daily life. If you're currently donning a smartwatch, keep these words of caution in mind to avoid falling into any training pitfalls.

Many people in the U.K. now use apps, smartwatches or wearable devices to track their physical activity. Fitness trackers promise to help users become fitter, happier and healthier versions of themselves. For many people, they can be useful: a nudge to move more, a way to notice patterns, or a remin...

For younger athletes, specializing in a single sport typically does more harm than good, as research shows that these individuals tend to have shorter careers and a higher risk for injury and burnout than those who play multiple sports.

PARK CITY, Utah — Due to the physical and psychological risks associated with early sport specialization, a presenter at the International Extreme Sports Medicine Congress said not all young athletes should specialize in a sport early.“The key for sports for kids is that we want to make....

In sports, as in life, resilience goes a long way. And according to the findings of a recently published study, athletes with higher resilience experience lower rates of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and perceived stress than those with lower resilience. The study also found that athletes who had difficulty with emotion regulation, intolerance of uncertainty, sleep challenges, and poor social support were more likely to have lower resilience. As such, working on these areas could lead to greater resilience and better mental health for athletes over time.

Researchers have identified several modifiable factors that influence psychological resilience in female athletes and found that greater resilience may help protect against depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and high levels of perceived stress.

With the World Cup in full swing and soccer fever taking over for many Americans, we thought now would be a good time to break down how and why soccer injuries occur, and what you can do to prevent them. Some of the most common soccer-related injuries are strains and tears of the hamstrings, ankle sprains, and ACL tears, which occur due to a variety of factors, including inadequate recovery, rapid increases in training workload, and individual factors like strength deficits, movement quality, sleep, and nutrition. Read on to learn more about soccer injuries and how to minimize your risk on the field.

Soccer is faster and more physically demanding than ever—and injuries are one of the biggest challenges facing the modern game. For active women involved in sports and other athletic pursuits, prevention is key to reducing the unevenly risk for ACL injuries.

No one wants to hear the distinctive pop of an ACL tearing or rupturing, which typically means the player's season is at an end. The ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament, is located inside the knee and provides stability during movements such as cutting, turning, twisting, and jumping. Deanna Brinks,....

So what does being "fit" actually mean, anyways? It turns out there's more than one type of fitness, with two of the most important categories being aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic fitness involves exerting yourself for extended periods of time (like long-distance running or cycling), while anaerobic fitness refers to your ability to perform short, high-intensity movements (like sprinting or doing high-intensity interval training, and both are important for your overall health profile.

You probably have at least one "super fit" friend. Maybe they're a marathon runner, a footy player or a keen hiker. To keep themselves healthy, they may stick to a strict exercise regimen and only eat certain foods. But in most cases, these people would likely struggle to play a sport or do an activ...
