A gestational diabetes diagnosis often comes as a surprise in the middle of an already busy pregnancy. It develops when pregnancy hormones make the body more resistant to insulin, and for most women it causes no obvious symptoms, which is why routine screening between 24 and 28 weeks is such an important part of prenatal care.

Some pregnancies carry a higher likelihood of a diagnosis, including those affected by PCOS, a family history of type 2 diabetes, or a previous gestational diabetes pregnancy, and Jersey City's diverse population reflects several of these risk factors. Once diagnosed, most women manage the condition well through a combination of nutrition guidance, regular movement, blood sugar monitoring, and, when needed, medication.

This isn't about following every guideline exactly, just building a consistent routine with support from a care team that knows your history. Blood sugar generally returns to normal shortly after delivery, though ongoing screening is recommended in the years that follow because of an increased long-term risk of type 2 diabetes.

Two questions we hear often — and the straight answers.

Q: Is STI testing really confidential?
A: Yes. Testing and results stay between you and your provider.

Q: Do I need symptoms to get tested?
A: No. Many STIs don't cause symptoms at all. Regular testing is a normal part of routine care, whether or not anything feels wrong.

We test for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, and hepatitis B and C, and we offer HPV and hepatitis vaccines. Same practice, same provider, no separate clinic visit.
