Yes I will advocate for yourself too, especially when you can’t. But it doesn’t mean that you can’t have your voice.

Good advocacy is enpowering you to have & USE your voice.

It’s YOUR birth,
YOUR body,
YOUR baby,

You have rights as a patient.
You have a say in your medical care.
YOU have the power to consent or decline any intervention (within reason).

& having a doula does not mean that they will speak for you at all times. It means, they’ll support YOU in using your voice and amplifying your voice. But they can’t be your voice. No one can be.

Doula support is empowerment 💪🏾

Movement during labor is essential. But you also need to know WHICH movements are working.

Any position that causes:
👉🏾stronger contractions
👉🏾more pressure
👉🏾making you feel like you want to p**p
👉🏾makes your labor more uncomfortable
Means it’s WORKING!

Sighs that labor is progressing:
🩵increase nausea
🩵vomiting
🩵uncontrollable shaking
🩵increased intensity & pressure
🩵 feeling restless, wanting to “give up”

The reality is, the more uncomfortable it gets, the better!

IF SOMETHING FEELS OFF,

IF SOMETHING FEELS EXTREME,

IF SOMETHING DOES NOT MAKE SENSE,

IF SOMETHING ISNT WORKING,

Whatever your intuition tells you, 9/10 you are right!

Just because you’re a first time mom & never gone through labor, delivery and postpartum before, it doesn’t mean you can’t know or feel when something isn’t right. The key? ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF till you’re blue in the face.

Just because you didn’t go to medical school, it doesn’t mean you can’t make decisions for your care or decline recommendations. They key? INFORMED CONSENT (you’ve been told risks, benefits, alternatives & why a procedure/intervention is recommended).

YOU know your body and how things feel. What seems normal and what doesn’t.

You KNOW your baby cause you grew him/her from scratch.

Silencing your intuition can often cost you!

Speak up.
Ask questions.
Get that 2nd opinion.
Ask more questions.
Switch providers.
Make your decision.

EVERY MOM deserves support. A C-section does NOT disqualify you from having support during birth.

This is me about to go into the OR to support my client 💪🏾

People often believe that doulas are only for vaginal births or unmedicated births. & yes, some doulas specialize in those. But a doula is a support person. Period.

We are here to support mom through the entire journey!

Consider having that support if you’re planning for a C-section or you are high risk and know you’ll have a higher chance of ending up having one.

Many of the benefits of a doula still apply 👌🏾

C-section moms deserves just as much!

Whether a woman is a first time mom or not, she often knows best.

She knows her body.
She knows her baby.
She knows when something feels off or wrong.

Being able to diagnose complications or ailments often rely on what the patient reports. So it is important to investigate every claim made.

Many mothers have died in childbirth. Not because their complications were impossible to treat. But because they weren’t believed & by the time anyone realized what the mother tried to say, it was often too late.

Advocating for yourself is necessary. If deep down inside, something does not feel right, fight until it is addressed.

If you want more information about how to advocate for yourself, DM “advocacy”.

Oh the stories we have to tell! 😬😬😬

We often don’t think about it but birth doulas are not only witnesses to birthing in the hospital system. We often experience 2nd hand trauma from what some of our moms experience despite our efforts to advocate for them & improve their overall birth experience.

I hope one day, doulas can share a space with OBGYNs and medical providers to improve maternal health outcomes & birthing experiences 🙏🏾

The machine behind labor contraction and delivery is: ✨ THE BRAIN ✨

The brain is responsible for releasing and balancing all of the hormones involved in the labor & delivery process (it’s not just oxytocin alone).

The 🧠 goes through a specific process that can be affected by many things: how your body responds, baby’s involvement, your birth environment, your state of mind & your feelings.

Positive attitudes towards birth & even inductions tends to lead to positive outcomes. While negative attitudes towards birth tend to lead to complications & negative outcomes.

Your labor & body responds to HOW YOU FEEL!
👉🏾 Emotions & feelings that can make labor feel more painful, slow down or stall dilation (aka you dilate slow or stop dilating): fear, anxiety, panic, overstimulation, feeling unheard, feeling unsupported, feeling silenced, confusion, restlessness.

👉🏾 Emotions & feelings that help labor progress: trust in medical team, trust in your body, confidence, joy, being at peace, feeling supported & heard, feeling knowledgeable, under stimulated, rested.

As a doula, I see the difference in how the body labors based on how mom is feeling. This is why your birth environment is CRUCIAL to the labor & delivery process.

WAYS TO SUPPORT YOURSELF MENTALLY & EMOTIONALLY DURING LABOR:
➡️Choose a medical provider you trust & that has a similar birth philosophy as you
➡️Choose a place of birth that aligns with your desired outcome & where you’ll feel supported
➡️Make sure your partner and support people are equipped to support YOU during labor
➡️Hire a doula
➡️Dim the lights where you are laboring: dark room = good for the brain
➡️Keep your birth environment peaceful & stress free (as much as possible)
➡️Educate yourself on physiological birth & induction methods to make decisions that will benefit you & decrease risks
➡️ Face your fears about labor before you get there
➡️Reframe how you see labor, delivery, vaginal vs C-section, medicated vs. unmedicated

If you want support in this area, consider:
• Taking a childbirth education class
• Taking a hypnobirthing class

A midwife can perform MANY of the duties an OBGYN does except complex procedures & surgeries. If you have a midwife, you don’t need an OBGYN unless your pregnancy becomes high risk or severe complications requiring surgery (like a C-section) arises.

Midwives are qualified to do SO MUCH!

Doulas, however are support people. Someone who can keep you grounded, advocate for you & support the labor and delivery process as well as postpartum recovery. They do NOT perform medical procedures, interventions or care. If a doula claims to perform any medical procedures like cervical checks or more, RUN!

Hope this helps! 🩵
