My patient Cindy was hit with a $10,000 Emergency Room bill. She doesn’t have insurance.

“I should have signed up for that insurance you told me about,” she said.

Technically it’s not insurance. It’s a medical health share plan. In my opinion, it’s better than insurance.

Several of my patients, and I myself, have Zion Healthshare plan. There are other similar healthshares.

Instead of a deductible, there is an IUA – Initial Unsharable Amount. It can be $1250 or $2500 or more, whatever you choose. Coverage is grouped by “incidents.” So in Cindy’s case, she had a probable heart related event. The ER visit would have been $1250 for her (if she chose the lowest IUA), and the followup heart monitor, bloodwork, and cardiology visits would all be covered since it was for the same “incident.”

I have a patient with chronic back pain. His MRI, physical therapy, and specialist visits are all covered as one “incident.” That’s so much better than the typical costs with traditional health insurance.

The monthly price is quite good in my opinion. My daughter just started her first job, and the insurance that was offered is confusing and potentially very expensive. So she signed up for Zion Healthshare for $219 per month for the $1250 IUA.

It’s important to sign up before you have an issue. Pre-existing conditions are generally not covered for the first year.

Zion has a good video comparing the coverage of Zion versus traditional coverage. It’s titled “What is a Zion HealthShare IUA?” I will put a link in the comments below.

For those over 65 yrs old, I recommend Medishare 65 Plus. It's a supplement to Medicare. Three years ago my husband had $490,000 in medical bills. We were only responsible for $500. Amazing!

I often say “It’s safer” to get blood tests drawn at my office. We give you the price. No guessing games.

We are often appalled at the prices people have to pay through the hospital, even with insurance.

One patient had a simple urinalysis with culture at the hospital. She thought her insurance would pay for it. Her jaw dropped when she saw the bill for $400 ! She had not yet hit her deductible.

If she had the urinalysis and culture through my office at Pine Creek Family Medicine, it would have cost her only $25.

At Pine Creek Family Medicine, near Jersey Shore, PA, we love being able to offer low-cost blood tests to the public at transparent prices. No more guessing games of what you will have to pay.

Some people say it must be too good to be true. Nope. They are real blood tests processed by a national lab (LabCorp).

Simply get an order from your provider and give us a call. We give you the price and an appointment for the lab draw. We send the results to your provider.

We look forward to saving you money.

We love hearing how much money we save people on blood tests.

One patient says after insurance last year, she was billed $800. This year, for the same labs, she paid $175 at my office.

Another lady had to pay $750 last year despite using her insurance. At our place today, she paid $90 for the same labs.

At Pine Creek Family Medicine, near Jersey Shore, PA, we love being able to offer low-cost blood tests to the public at transparent prices. No more guessing games of what you will have to pay.

My patient saved $500!

My patient had a month-long cough with some trouble breathing at times. I suggested getting a chest Xray. He has new insurance with a high deductible, so he checked with the local hospital for “self-pay price.” He was told it was $560 ….for a simple chest Xray! Wow!

But there’s a better option. Susquehanna Valley Diagnostic Imaging in Bloomsburg, PA has great self-pay imaging prices. That chest Xray was only $60. A savings of $500! So he drove to Bloomsburg, had the chest Xray, and stopped at a restaurant with his wife on the way home. Much more affordable and enjoyable.

Many doctors have the price list from Susquehanna Valley Diagnostic Imaging, or they can request it. They offer most imaging – ultrasounds, xrays, MRI’s, CT scans. And straightforward pricing.

It’s been a great option for many patients.

I’m not a Lyme Doctor.

But we can run a Lyme test at Pine Creek Family Medicine if your doctor orders it.

Tests for Lyme Disease usually include a “screening test,” and if it’s positive, then the more comprehensive Western Blot test is done.

My analogy is this – The Lyme screen is like listening at a closed door. If you don’t hear anything, you walk away. But the Western Blot test is like opening the door. There might be several people hanging out in that room!

I have had a few patients with a negative screening test, yet when I insisted on the Western Blot test, it came back positive.

At Pine Creek Family Medicine near Jersey Shore, PA, we can run the Western Blot test for $80 plus $10 drawing fee. (One of my patients said it was $3000 at a local hospital! )

We send the results to the ordering provider, and they decide what the next steps are.

We also run many other blood tests at low-cost transparent prices. Go to www.PineCreekFamMed.com/services and click on the first link for more information and our order form.

Four years ago, I opened Pine Creek Family Medicine, the area’s first Direct Primary Care (DPC) medical office. My patients pay a monthly membership fee in exchange for essentially unlimited access.

Today it’s a thriving practice.

This is the way Medicine should be!

Four years ago I left my job of 21 years. I wasn’t sure what I would be doing, but I trusted that God and my family would be with me on my next journey.

Fast forward 4 years, and I am SO grateful for the change. I discovered the world of DPC (Direct Primary Care) where patients pay a monthly fee in exchange for unlimited office visits. My patients and I are FREE from the middle-man of insurance. I can spend TIME with my patients. I can learn new things and share them with others.

In the past I wondered how long I could survive on the treadmill of being a traditional doctor. These days I’m very content. Aah, life is good!
