🎓 Heading off to college? Don’t forget your meningitis vaccine!

Living in close quarters like residence halls and dorms can increase the risk of spreading meningococcal disease, a serious illness that can cause meningitis (infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and bloodstream infections.

💉 Before moving in, check that your meningococcal vaccine is up to date. Many colleges require students to have the meningococcal vaccine.

🦟 Dump It. Drain It. Defend Against Mosquitoes! 🦟

Mosquitoes don't need much water to breed—just a small amount of standing water can become a breeding site in as little as a week!

Help protect yourself, your family, and your community by checking your property regularly and:
💧 Empty buckets, flowerpot saucers, toys, and birdbaths at least once a week.
🚮 Remove old tires and other items that collect rainwater.
🏡 Clean gutters so water can drain properly.
🌧️ Cover or drain tarps, boats, and outdoor equipment that hold water.
🐾 Change pet water bowls frequently.

Reducing standing water is one of the easiest and most effective ways to help prevent mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile virus.

Need to safely dispose of used needles or sharps? We’ve got you covered!

The Jersey County Health Department offers a large outdoor sharps disposal kiosk for safe and convenient disposal of used needles, syringes, lancets, and other approved sharps.

Using the kiosk helps protect sanitation workers, first responders, and our community by keeping sharps out of household trash and recycling.

📍 Located outside the Jersey County Health Department for easy access.

Please remember:
✔️ Place sharps in a puncture-resistant container before disposal.
✔️ Do not place loose sharps in the kiosk.
✔️ No medications or other medical waste—sharps only.

Let’s work together to keep our community safe and clean!
