On June 7th, USDA announced two additional NWS cases in Texas- a calf in La Salle County with an umbilical lesion, and a dog in Andrews County.

*UPDATE* The NWS case in Andrews County has been reclassified by USDA to be the first case in New Mexico, not Texas: https://bit.ly/USDA-NWSNM

An additional infested zone has been established in La Salle and Webb County, and additional epidemiological investigations are occurring to learn more about the case in Andrews County. Those located in the infested zones should stay updated with current movement requirements. View the TAHC interactive NWS map here: https://bit.ly/NWS-ZoneMap

Updates for New World Screwworm NWS in Texas🪱

With the very recent cases (2) in Zavala and Uvalde counties, movement of livestock, including horses, is currently restricted in the affected counties.

Please refer to the TAHC link below for more details on dates, animals infected, and quarantine information.

As of June 7, Zavala and Uvalde are the only counties in Texas with restrictions, but this is a dynamic situation, and movement of livestock, including horses, both intrastate and interstate, may be affected in the days and/or weeks ahead.

If you plan to travel, especially out of state, be prepared that each state may have different entry requirements.

While Texas is working to control the spread of NWS, it's essential to stay vigilant at home. Good husbandry, fly control, and wound care are crucial in keeping your animals protected.

Keep in mind that NWS doesn't discriminate. In addition to livestock and horses, people, domestic animals, and wildlife are all susceptible.

Call your veterinarian if you notice any unusual symptoms, such as delayed wound healing.

Electroacupuncture is a form of acupuncture that adds electrical stimulation to the acupuncture needles on acupuncture points. It has shown varying efficacious results for managing thoracolumbar back pain in the literature, making it an interesting treatment option.

Not all horses will tolerate electroacupuncture needles, however, or stand still for extended periods to receive treatment. As an alternative, veterinarians are beginning to reach for laser acupuncture.
