July is Fibroid Awareness Month! What are fibroids? Fibroids (leiomyomas) are tumors or growths in the uterus that can develop during the childbearing years. They can grow in and around the muscle layer of the uterine wall. Some of the symptoms associated with fibroids include excessive or painful bleeding during your period, bleeding between your periods, frequent urination, pain during s*x, low back pain, constipation, and enlargement of the abdomen. Fibroids are more common in Black women. Those who have a family history and are obese are at risk for developing fibroids. However, you have options for management and don’t need to suffer in silence. If you are concerned that you may have fibroids, mention it to your doctor. I’m on my personal fibroid journey and decided to pursue surgical management. I chose not suffer in silence any longer.
