Today, Tennessee feels a little less sparkly. 💔✨

From the Great Smoky Mountains to Nashville and far beyond, Dolly Parton gave the world a lifetime of music, laughter, kindness, and joy. But here in Tennessee, she was something even more special — she was one of our own.

Her songs became the soundtrack to so many lives, including those of generations of residents throughout The Waters. We’ve sung along to her music, danced to her songs, dressed up in her honor, shared stories about her, and made more than a few wonderful memories along the way.

Today, as we look back on one of those fun-filled Dolly days at The Waters, these photos feel just a little more special. 🤍

Dolly, thank you for the music. Thank you for the laughter. Thank you for the generosity, the rhinestones, the big hair, the bigger heart, and all the joy you shared with the world.

Most of all, thank you for giving Tennessee so much to be proud of.

Today we say goodbye, but we also celebrate one incredible life and a legacy that will live on for generations.

From your Tennessee Waters family, rest in peace, Dolly. 🦋✨

We will always love you. 🤍

Roger worked at the same little store for 46 years. By the time he retired, it had his name on it.

Roger is 79 years old and has called The Waters of Johnson City home for almost three years.

He was born with cerebral palsy and grew up walking with crutches. But Roger also grew up in a family that made one thing very clear to him:

Having a disability didn’t mean he couldn’t do or become whatever he wanted.

Roger believed them.

As a teenager, he got his start selling GRIT newspapers. He remembers going around selling copies—and occasionally encountering a customer who didn’t have the money to pay him.

Apparently, Roger was willing to negotiate.

Sometimes they paid him in snack cakes instead.

Not a bad deal.

But the job that would become a huge part of Roger’s life came in 1977, when he began working at East Tennessee State University’s Buc Mart.

Roger stayed.

And stayed.

And stayed some more.

From 1977 until 2023, Roger spent 46 years working there, becoming such a familiar part of the place that eventually the store received a new name:

Roger’s Buc Mart.

All these years later, that’s something Roger is still incredibly proud of.

1977 was a pretty important year for another reason, too.

It was the year Roger married the love of his life.

They would spend the next 47 years together, building a life and raising their son, until her passing in 2024.

Today, you don’t have to look very hard to find Roger.

Chances are, he’s sitting in his wheelchair near his doorway at The Waters, ready to talk to just about anyone who passes by.

And usually, he has something kind to say.

Because Roger figures you never really know what kind of day someone is having—and sometimes seeing a smiling face or hearing a kind word can make it a little better.

He’s also a regular at activities and has been known to encourage other residents to come along with him.

Maybe that shouldn’t be surprising.

Roger spent 46 years becoming the kind of person people remembered when they walked into a store.

Now, he’s become the kind of person people can count on seeing when they walk down the hall.

A smile.

A conversation.

A kind word.

And a reminder from a man whose name literally ended up on the store where he worked:

Never let someone else decide what you’re capable of.

This is Roger. This is .

Oh, baby! 🍼💙

We had a little surprise up our sleeves the other day! Our team came together to throw a surprise baby shower for our Administrator, Jayson Allen, and his wife as they get ready to welcome their newest little addition very soon! 👶🎉

It was such a special afternoon celebrating the parents-to-be, complete with lots of love, well wishes, and delicious food generously catered by our facility NP, Crystal Schmidt!

Please join us in wishing Jayson and his wife all the best as they count down the days until baby arrives! đź’•
