We keep hearing the same story about testosterone in women: too much of it, and you get PCOS, insulin resistance, metabolic chaos.

Nobody talks about what happens when you don’t have enough.

A new Japanese study looked at normal-weight women — no PCOS, no obesity, none of the usual confounders. Lower testosterone was linked to worse blood sugar: higher HbA1c, higher fasting glucose, more insulin resistance. The insulin resistance link held even after adjusting for BMI, age, and menopausal status.

Postmenopausal women in the study had roughly half the testosterone of premenopausal women — and worse glucose numbers to match.

Sound familiar? We already accept this in men: physiological testosterone protects metabolic health, and it’s the extremes in either direction that cause trouble. We just haven’t asked the same question in women.

Small study (n=69), cross-sectional, so no causation claims here. But it’s one more data point against the idea that testosterone in women is only something to suppress or not check. Or deny.
