It can feel like a lot of pressure as a parent to explain topics like LGBTQ+ in the “right” way - but the topic only feels heavy because you’ve experienced it through an adult lens with all the weight that decades of other adults have put on it.

That uncertainty can lead us to avoid the topic or change the subject - even with the best intentions.

We get the opportunity to introduce our kids to differences as just being what they see them as - different. Not better, not worse, just different.

So when the outside noise does start to come in, that’s the part that feels wrong to them, not the families themselves.

Families are beautiful and all families are different and to kids that makes perfect sense.

Happy Pride! 🌈

Just because something stops a child’s behavior doesn’t mean it’s regulating them - it’s only distracting them.

Kids respond to screens and certain content differently. Having these conversations early helps them grow up with an awareness of how screens impact them and what helps them break out of “mushy brain.”

Send this one to the last person you vented to about your child’s mushy brain (before you maybe had a term for it).❤️

And follow along for more resources from a child therapist and mom of ✌🏻

Parent-child play is so important for your child’s development and mental health but it’s also something that so many parents hate to do.

We have enough on our plates and even if we get a chance to play, the to-do list is running in our mind the entire time.

Also - what if we don’t know how to play anymore?

Start here:

⏳Keep it short: 5-10 minutes of intentional play a day can make a huge difference.

🧸Let them lead: Don’t worry about planning out an elaborate play scenario, just ask your child what they want to do and let them take it from there.

✌🏻Plan an exit strategy: Let them know ahead of time that you have 10 minutes and then you have to finish XYZ. When it’s time to stop, remind them what you are going to do and give them an option to continue playing independently or bringing the game into the room and playing near you.

🌈Follow along with me for more of how to utilize play to nurture your child’s mental health in the early years.
