Balance plays an important role in everyday activities like walking, climbing stairs, and moving safely throughout the day. As we age or recover from an illness or injury, balance exercises can help improve stability, strength, and confidence with movement.
Balance training is often part of rehabilitation programs designed to help people improve mobility and reduce their risk of falls. While you should always talk with your healthcare provider about any concerns with your balance, some activities that may improve balance include:
• Standing on one foot while holding on to a stable surface
• Heel-to-toe walking
• Tai Chi, which uses slow, controlled movements
• Strength exercises to support the muscles needed for balance and stability
Always use support, such as a sturdy chair or countertop, when practicing balance exercises.

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to learn, change, and adapt by reorganizing and forming new connections. After a stroke, brain injury, or other neurological condition, neuroplasticity helps the brain form new pathways that can support the recovery of lost skills.
Rehabilitation uses therapeutic activities to encourage neuroplasticity and improve movement, coordination, cognition, and communication. Repetition of task-specific activities helps the brain strengthen connections needed for everyday functions, while continued practice and engagement can support ongoing recovery and independence.

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. Fast treatment is critical because early care can help reduce brain damage and improve outcomes.

If you suspect someone may be having a stroke, remember the warning signs of BE FAST:

B – Balance. Sudden loss of balance or coordination.
E – Eyes. Sudden vision changes.
F – Face. One side of the face is drooping.
A – Arm. Weakness or numbness in an arm.
S – Speech. Speech is slurred or difficulty speaking.
T – Time. Call 911 if someone displays any of these symptoms.

While the Ernest Health logo is called the "bug" and is cute and aesthetically pleasing, there is also story behind it.
The symbol looks like it is made up of four people, working together with arms outreached to help the next. The hearts created in the arms represent our passionate, compassionate team members, connected at the core by our patients. Each quadrant represents one of the healing cycles of our patients: physical, psychological, emotional, and medical. The dot in the center represents our patients; they are at the core of everything we do. The inside lines create a cross because we believe a spiritual healing occurs, too!

Northern Colorado Rehabilitation Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Brain Injury Rehabilitation.

These national accreditations are voluntary and reflect the hospital’s commitment to providing safe and effective care to patients who suffer from a brain injury.

To achieve the best possible results for our patients, we have utilized best practices and a patient-centered, rehabilitative
approach. We are committed to helping our patients return home with as much physical and cognitive independence as possible.

Our medical professionals work as a team with patients and their family members to create individualized treatment plans so the patients can progress at their own ability levels. The team is led by a full-time medical director and may consist of specially trained physicians, rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, case managers and other medical professionals.

We are passionate about patient care and consider it a privilege to provide a higher standard of service in Brain Injury Rehabilitation to Johnstown and the surrounding areas.

At Northern Colorado Rehabilitation Hospital, all our patients receive medical and rehabilitative care under the direction of a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician, also known as a physiatrist or PM&R physician daily. These physicians specialize in the treatment of conditions which may cause
significant impairment of mobility, self-care skills, ability to work, and ability to participate in recreational activities. Following an injury or illness, the care of a physiatrist can be critical to a patient’s ability to regain their highest and safest level of functioning and return to their community.

What Makes a PM&R Physician Unique?

• Physiatrists are trained to treat the whole person, to enhance or restore
functional mobility and quality of life.

• PM&R physicians will diagnose the source of disability, then develop an
individualized, comprehensive rehabilitation and treatment program for each patient.

• Physiatrists work with a team of medical professionals to help each patient reach their
functional goals through use of numerous treatments, including: therapeutic exercise,
physical modalities, medications, self-care training, and assistive device training.
