Not every struggle with alcohol looks the same—but every step toward awareness matters.

If you’ve been questioning your relationship with alcohol, or supporting someone who is, StepOne Service at Mercy Joplin is here to help you get started in a safe, judgment-free way.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month—a time to start honest conversations about how alcohol impacts our lives, families, and communities. It’s not about judgment—it’s about awareness, education, and support. Whether you’re questioning your relationship with alcohol, supporting someone in recovery, or simply learning more, every step toward understanding matters. Healing begins with awareness—and no one has to walk that path alone. 💚

Recovery challenges us to be proactive.

After all, most enter recovery with the desire to avoid early death, further loss, and legal troubles.

Obtaining health and car insurance are two ways to be proactive and show yourself that you value your life.

Health insurance helps to open doors to healing. Car insurance financially and legally protects you.

Obtaining insurance might not be among your first 10 steps of recovery...

but keeping this in mind, and doing a bit of research will help you in the longterm.

Bad day? Still counts.
Hard moment? Still progress.

What’s one thing you’re grateful for today?

Time spent daily obtaining and consuming alcohol or opioids...

including time spent with "old friends,"...

needs to be replaced in early recovery.

There are many ways to do this.

Start by downloading a calendar app. At first, it can be intimidating to see empty space for each day, but there are infinite options for filling it with productive and healthy activities.

Interested in mutual aid support groups like AA or NA?
-Start scheduling meetings this week.

Worried about nighttime cravings and there aren’t late meetings nearby?
-Join a virtual 24/7 meeting and listen to stories from others in recovery.

Applying to jobs?
-Schedule dedicated time to submit resumes.

Looking for community?
-Volunteer or grab lunch with people from support groups.

Want a small, peaceful responsibility?
-Get a plant and schedule time to care for it.

Remember: Replacing old routines won’t happen overnight, and some days will feel harder than others. But each intentional activity you schedule is a step toward building a life in recovery that is fulfilling, balanced, and sustainable.

Even small actions matter—and consistency is what creates long-term change.

Recovery doesn’t just remove substances; it reveals everything that’s been waiting.

Co-Occurring Medical Conditions with Substance Use Disorder

💭 StepOne Service becomes a key part of your local recovery community, because many people don’t realize in early recovery how critical it is to address underlying medical conditions—something other treatment facilities often can’t manage.

🩺 During acute withdrawal, our patients are admitted to a hospital where co-occurring medical issues can be diagnosed, monitored, and treated.

⚕ Ignoring these conditions can put recovery at risk, because managing your health is just as important as managing cravings.

🫀 Taking care of your body from the start sets the foundation for a longer, healthier, and more sustainable recovery.

Starting recovery is hard. Walking through that first door is even harder.

That’s why patient access matters so much. It’s the difference between feeling overwhelmed and feeling supported.

We see you, we appreciate you, and we’re here when someone is ready to take that first step.
