The hardest hours are often the ones after dark.

When Dad is up at 2 a.m., or Mom is not safe alone overnight, that is not a problem a brochure solves. Charlotte's Angels can have a caregiver there through the night, awake and local, so the family is not on the night shift.

You can have around-the-clock care to maintain independence and quality of life in a place that is familiar to you. Two of our trained caregivers will rotate every 12 hours to provide you with the proper care you need. They are awake, alert, and ready to help you with any obstacles that may come up.

If overnight is more than you need, we will say so.

When families call Charlotte's Angels, they reach people who live and work here in Joplin.

We're locally owned — not a franchise. Kim Roy (our COO, and an Alzheimer's Association-certified dementia trainer) is one of the people you can actually talk to about what's going on at home. We've been helping families in this community since 2008.

If you're looking for in-home help for a parent or spouse, we're glad to share what's available locally.

Be Someone's Angel.

Dementia isn’t just memory loss. It slows how the brain takes in words, holds information, and finds a reply. That’s why how you talk matters as much as what you say.

Try this:

• Get their attention first. Approach from the front, say their name, sit or kneel at eye level. Standing over someone can feel threatening.

• One idea at a time. Long sentences overload working memory. “Let’s go to the kitchen.” Pause. “Would you like tea or coffee?”

• Offer two choices, not open questions. “What do you want for lunch?” is hard. “Soup or a sandwich?” is doable. Show the options if you can.

• Don’t quiz or correct. “Do you remember…?” and “That’s not right” highlight what they’ve lost and raise distress. Respond to the feeling: “You miss her. Tell me about her.”

• Wait. Processing can take 10–30 seconds. Silence is not failure — it’s them working.

• Skip elder speak . No baby voice, no “sweetie” talk-down. Speak to the adult who is still there.

• Reduce noise. TV, radio, and extra voices make words harder to catch.

The aim isn’t to restore facts. It’s to keep dignity, lower fear, and stay connected.

Charlotte's Angels is proud to be the leader in Alzheimer's and Dementia care in Southwest Missouri. Validate and Redirect is a simple dementia care tool: first honor the feeling, then gently shift the moment. Don’t correct the facts—meet the emotion.

How it works

1. Validate — Their world is real to them. Arguing raises fear and agitation. Name the feeling: missing home, needing to work, looking for Mom.
2. Redirect — Once they feel heard, ease toward something calm: a memory, a snack, a photo, a short walk.

It’s not lying. It’s dignity. Logic fades; the need to feel safe does not.
Save this for the next “I want to go home” moment. What’s one phrase that has helped you?

Caregivers,

Are you feeling more tired than normal? Getting sick more often? Feeling numb, resentful, or hopeless? Caregiving can be stressful - that's normal. Burnout is different. Try this simple, 30-second check in to better yourself:

• Have I eaten today?
• Have I slept enough (or at least rested)?
• Have I moved my body in any way?
• Have I had one moment that was just for me?
• Have I asked for help with anything?

You're not alone. Asking for help is always an option. Call us at (417)627-9322.
