Are we getting stronger… or just lifting heavier?
Throughout my years in fitness, I’ve started questioning how we define progress.
We’ve been taught to add more weight, push harder, and increase intensity.
But what about the foundation of how we move?
Before adding resistance, can we move with control? Maintain balance, stability, posture, and a comfortable range of motion?
Adding weight doesn’t automatically mean we’re moving better.
Sometimes progress looks like squatting deeper, rotating more freely, improving balance, or simply becoming more connected to our bodies.
That’s progress too.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE strength training! Resistance is an incredible tool for building strength and capability.
But let’s be intentional about WHY we’re adding it.
We’re not just training to lift heavier weights.
We’re building strength to carry our kids, hike mountains, surf waves, move heavy things, and continue doing what we love as we age.
The goal isn’t to become better at exercising. It’s to become more capable of living.
This is the philosophy behind PHYSICAL HYGIENE and my program Your Most Capable Self.
Mobility + activation.
Functional strength + stability.
Recovery + intentional movement.
Building a foundation, then progressively challenging it to support the life we want to live.
I’m also sharing FREE guided movement practices on YouTube!
