Looking Ahead

Continue planting trees and conserving water. I know that it has been dry, but be strategic about watering. I plan around the precipitation.
A couple of tips I would recommend regarding lawns are to stop fertilizing in early summer. Fertilizing in the fall yields better root development and quicker green-up in the spring.
Besides, fertilizing in the summer stresses the grass and requires more water.
Mowing in the heat of the day does the same.
Sharpen your mower blades regularly. It prevents the mower blades from tearing at the tips and exposing the turf to disease.
Share any of your tips.

Experimenting With A Grass Mix

I ordered what is called a Low Work and Water Mix. It is based on two dwarf turf-type tall fescue cultivars.
It is shorter than other fescue. The seed combination is Birmingham Tall Fescue and Memphis Tall Fescue.
Both have deep root systems for good drought tolerance.
Both tolerate full sun and partial shade.
Both hold up to foot traffic.
They stay green through the summer better than many cool-season grasses.

I will let you know next season how it performed through the winter and into the spring.

Why Iron Deficiency in Grass?

Iron is an abundant micronutrient in the soil. However, it is insoluble in the soil. Symptoms appear as interveinal yellowing of the youngest leaves. Iron affects shoot growth but not initially.
A high pH is one factor that makes iron insoluble in the soil. One remedy is a chelated iron, which is a stable compound, an organic-iron compound. It is more soluble and less likely to leach from the soil.

Ferrous ammonium sulfate is short-term and will leach from the soil.

Turf

Did you know that calcium is important in cell walls? It is also important in the growth and development of new stems, leaves, and roots. Calcium is rare as a deficiency in turf. There is a large amount of it in the soil.

Do You Love Spinach?

Want spinach all year round? Tarsier is an (F1) Spinach Seed. It resists bolting. It is said to be upright and uniform.

This is from Johnny Seeds. It has a semi-savory taste. If you want a successive planting, then plant every 7 to 10 days through the season. It will grow in 6.5 to 7.5 pH.

Resistant to Downy Mildew and Stemphyllum Leaf Spot.
