✨ Please help us welcome Sam, our newest Physical Therapist Assistant! ✨

She joined the Geary Rehab team in May after relocating to JC with her husband, who is stationed at Fort Riley.

Sam specializes in orthopedic care and pelvic floor therapy, and is known for being creative, driven, empathetic, and a great listener with a strong problem-solving mindset.

Outside the clinic, you’ll find her reading, crafting, building Legos, or out on a motorcycle ride with her husband—and spending time with their German Shepherd, Theo 🐶

She’s also a fan of Red Bull Racing and McLaren F1 🏁

We’re excited to have her on the team—welcome to Geary Rehab, Sam!

🇺🇸 A Freedom Run throwback!

These photos take us back to the 1990's, when members of the Geary Rehab team laced up for what was then known as the Coors Freedom Run.

The Freedom Run - Junction City began in 1976, founded by Jerry Mathis, whose vision created a race that would become one of Junction City's favorite Fourth of July traditions. The original 10K even started out at the dam before making its way into town!

For the next three decades, Jerry Frakes carried that tradition forward as Race Director. Known for his American flag running shorts, neon Coors sunglasses, and trusty megaphone, Jerry helped shape the Freedom Run into an event that welcomed everyone—from elite competitors to first-time runners. His enthusiasm, leadership, and love for the community are still part of what makes this race so special today.

As a proud sponsor of this year's 50th Annual Freedom Run, Geary Rehab is honored to celebrate the incredible people who built this tradition and the thousands of runners who have been part of it over the years.

If you haven't signed up yet, there's still time! And after you cross the finish line, be sure to stop by the Geary Rehab booth for a healthy snack, a FREE Day Fitness Pass, and a little motivation to keep you moving.

Here's to 50 years of running, community, and celebrating together. We'll see you at the finish line! 🏅

Meet Megan, one of our Physical Therapists!

Megan brings energy, positivity, and a competitive spirit to our team every day. She specializes in orthopedics, women’s health, and acute care, bringing a reliable, compassionate, and supportive approach that helps patients feel comfortable, confident, and cared for.

When she’s not helping others feel their best, you can usually find her chasing after her almost 3-year-old daughter Lainey, tailgating at K-State games, spending time outdoors, or cheering on the Chiefs. Fun fact: Megan played college basketball and still has that competitive spirit! 🏀

We’re lucky to have her on our team — and if you’ve been looking for someone passionate about women’s health and personalized care, Megan is a great resource. 💙

Happy Occupational Therapy Month

Here at Geary Rehab Pediatric Therapy, we assist with feeding exploration. Our focus is helping children develop safe, comfortable, and confident eating skills. Occupational Therapists (OTs) work closely with families to assess a child's relationship with food, including sensitivities to textures and tastes. Some children may prefer only smooth or crunchy foods, while others avoid mixed textures altogether. Through gradual exposure and play-based strategies, OT's introduce new foods in a low-pressure way, helping children expand their diets while respecting their sensory needs.

A key component of feeding therapy is improving oral motor skills such as chewing, tongue movement, and managing different food consistencies. Children are guided to take small bites, use their tongue effectively, and develop coordinated chewing patterns. By breaking skills down into manageable steps, this assists the child in building strength, coordination and confidence.

Family involvement is essential to support progress at home. This involves coaching parents on using consistent routines and positive reinforcement, along with strategies tailored to their child's needs. One parent shared, "My son made poor choices to fuel his body and had inconsistency with different textures. Through feeding therapy, he expanded his food goal range and is now able to mix two and even three different textures."

The photo provides a sample of tools/toys used in sessions to engage the child with feeding incorporating toys, child-safe knives, tongs, cookie cutters and proper positioning to ensure the best outcome.

If you know a child that would benefit from Occupational Therapy, speak with their medical provider about a referral.

Celebrating OT Month: Enhancing Lives Through Adult Outpatient Occupational Therapy

April is Occupational Therapy (OT) Month—a perfect time to highlight the vital role occupational therapists play in helping adults regain independence and quality of life. While many are familiar with physical therapy, the scope and impact of occupational therapy, particularly in an outpatient setting, often remain less understood.

Adult Outpatient Occupational Therapy services are designed to help individuals recover, adapt, and thrive after injury, illness, surgery, or due to chronic conditions. The core focus is not just on physical function, but on the "occupations" or meaningful activities that fill a person's life—from self-care and work to leisure and social participation.

Our dedicated staff is comprised of Jennifer Johnson OTR/L, Janessa Albino, OTR/L, Ashton Roberts, OTR/L, Cheryl Diehl, COTA/L, and Emily Brasher, COTA/L.

Who Benefits from Outpatient OT?
Occupational therapists work with a diverse adult population dealing with a wide range of challenges. Some common conditions and situations addressed in the outpatient setting include:

Neurological Conditions: Recovery from stroke (CVA), managing symptoms of Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). OT focuses on improving motor control, cognitive skills, and adapting the environment for safety and independence.
Orthopedic Injuries: Rehabilitation following hand, wrist, or elbow surgery, fractures, tendon lacerations, or complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Specialized hand therapy is a common and crucial component of outpatient OT.
Chronic Pain and Arthritis: Learning joint protection techniques, modifying daily activities, and using adaptive equipment to reduce pain and preserve energy.
Age-Related Changes: Addressing issues like low vision, balance problems, and cognitive decline to ensure continued safety and ability to live independently at home.
Mental Health and Cognitive Challenges: Assisting individuals to develop routine, manage sensory processing issues, and improve executive functioning skills necessary for employment or daily tasks.
If you or someone you know could benefit from occupational therapy, talk to your medical provider about a referral.
