💙 When a child’s communication changes, there are often more questions than answers.

Sometimes the most helpful place to start is simply by gathering more information.

🔬 Looking at nutrition, metabolism, digestion, and other biochemical pathways can give us additional clues about areas that may deserve a closer look.

That doesn’t mean one lab result explains everything.

It means we can take the child’s symptoms, history, diet, and testing and look at the bigger picture.

Every child is different, and the goal is to understand the individual child—not just the symptoms.

💙 When a child is struggling, sometimes the hardest part is figuring out where to start looking.

Maybe communication has changed. Maybe they’re getting sick more often. Maybe their digestion isn’t quite right.

Sometimes there are several things going on at the same time, and that’s where testing can be helpful.

🔬 It can give us more information about nutrition, metabolism, digestion, and other areas that may be worth looking into.

I’m not looking for one abnormal result to explain everything.

I’m looking at the whole picture and asking, “What can this information tell us about how we can better support this child?”

Because every child is different, and their plan should be too.

💙 Sometimes the symptoms a child is experiencing are telling us there may be more to the story.

Getting sick frequently.
Seeing pieces of food in the stool.
Struggling with digestion.
Having a hard time adapting to new people or environments.

đŸ§© These symptoms don’t tell us exactly what’s happening—but they can give us reasons to look deeper.

In this case, comprehensive stool testing gave us additional information about his gut immune response, viral findings, and probiotic diversity.

🔎 The goal wasn’t to blame one finding or assume we had found “the answer.”

It was to understand more about the individual child and use that information to help guide a more personalized approach to nutrition, herbs, and supplementation.

Every child is different. And sometimes, better information gives us better questions to ask.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at higher risk of medical issues and are more prone to gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, which can worsen the symptoms of ASD, significantly affecting their health, learning, and development, and impacting their behavior.

🧠 âšĄïž meltdowns aren’t just “bad behavior” - sometimes they’re your child’s nervous system saying “I’m overwhelmed” 💛 A different lens on sensory overload kids on the spectrum :)

1.) Cheng, Y.C. et al. (2020). Heart Rate Variability in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Meta-Analysis.Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews. — Pooled multiple studies; found reduced vagal/parasympathetic activity as a recurring pattern in autism. Caveat: other individual studies (e.g., Visnovcova et al.) find mixed or even opposite results — this is a real but inconsistent area, not a settled trait marker.
2.) Sharon, G. et al. (2019). Human Gut Microbiota from Autism Spectrum Disorder Promote Behavioral Symptoms in Mice.Cell. — F***l microbiota from ~18 autistic vs. ~18 typically-developing children transplanted into germ-free mice; ASD-donor mice showed more autism-like behaviors and altered gut metabolites. Caveat: causal evidence is in mice, not humans — suggestive, not proof of causation in people.
3.) ‱ Schoen, S.A., Miller, L.J., Brett-Green, B. & Nielsen, D.M. (2009). Physiological and Behavioral Differences in Sensory Processing. Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience. — Small study (n≈100 total across 3 groups) found children with autism show a distinct autonomic arousal pattern compared to children with sensory modulation disorder and typical peers. Caveat: modest sample size, no direct behavior-physiology correlation established.

💙 Sometimes a parent knows something has changed long before they know how to explain it.

The aggression is different.
The meltdowns are happening more often.
Their child is constantly asking for food.
And they’re left wondering, “What are we missing?”

🔎 That question is one of the reasons I believe in looking deeper.

Not because every symptom has one hidden cause, but because every child deserves to be looked at as an individual—not just a list of behaviors.

đŸ§© Labs can give us additional pieces of the puzzle and help us ask better questions about nutrition, digestion, and overall health.

We may not get every answer from one test.

But sometimes, getting more information is exactly where a better plan begins.

💙 Gastrointestinal issues are significantly more common in children with autism, with constipation being one of the most frequently reported concerns.

🔬 Testing such as an Organic Acids Test and stool analysis can give us additional clues about gut bacteria, yeast, digestion, short-chain fatty acids, and other factors that may be affecting gut health.

Every child is different. The goal isn’t to blame the gut for everything—it’s to gather more information so we can create a more individualized plan.

🩠 Sometimes the gut story starts long before we ever run the test.

Antibiotics can be incredibly important when medically necessary, but they can also change the balance of microorganisms in the gut. When that balance shifts, certain organisms may become more abundant.

🔬 In this case, testing gave us additional clues.

We found elevated Arabinose on the OAT, and the stool analysis showed elevated Candida along with several bacterial markers.

That doesn’t mean we can point to one organism and say, “This is the cause.”

Instead, it gives us more information to consider alongside the child’s symptoms, history, diet, and overall health.

💙 That’s the value of looking at the bigger picture.

Testing isn’t about finding one abnormal number and chasing it.

It’s about gathering information that can help us ask better questions and make more informed decisions about how to support the individual child.

đŸ’© DR. WARRAN’S D.C “GET THINGS MOVING” SUPPLEMENT LIST

Here are a few supplements I commonly consider when supporting healthy bowel function:

đŸ”č Magnesium Citrate — commonly used to support bowel regularity by helping draw water into the intestines.

đŸ”č Slippery Elm — traditionally used to support and soothe the digestive tract.

đŸ”č Gallbladder Complex / Ox Bile — may be considered when looking at digestive function and bile support, particularly when there are reasons to investigate how fats are being digested.

The right option can vary depending on the child, their age, diet, medications, and what else may be going on.

đŸ’© CONSTIPATION ISN’T ALWAYS AS SIMPLE AS “MY CHILD DOESN’T POOP.”

Sometimes the clues are in the details:

▫ How long does it take them to have a bowel movement?
▫ Are they straining or withholding?
▫ What does the stool actually look like?
▫ Do they feel completely emptied afterward?
▫ Are they dealing with bloating or abdominal discomfort?
▫ How does their diet look?
▫ What have you already tried?

These details can help us understand whether we’re simply looking at an occasional bowel movement—or whether there may be a bigger digestive pattern worth investigating.

🔬 And that’s where testing can sometimes add another layer of information.

The goal isn’t to run every test available.

It’s to gather information that may help us understand where to look next and how to better support the individual child.

đŸ’© When constipation becomes this severe, it’s more than just “not going.”

Imagine watching your child go days without a bowel movement, dealing with discomfort and emotional changes, and eventually needing repeated trips to the hospital.

For families dealing with this, the question often becomes:

“Why does this keep happening?”

🔬 Sometimes looking deeper can give us additional clues about the digestive environment and help us understand what may be worth investigating.

Not every abnormal finding is the answer.

But when we can put the symptoms + history + testing together, we can start to see a bigger picture.

💙 In this case, the goal wasn’t to find a magic answer. It was to gather more information, create a more individualized plan, and then follow the child’s progress.

And seeing those bowel movements become more regular was a meaningful step in the right direction.
