Sometimes we’re asked, “What’s the difference between burial and cremation?” We’ve put together this guide to help you understand the options available.
Burial is when a loved one who has passed is placed in a casket and laid to rest in the ground or in a mausoleum above ground. They may also be embalmed before burial.
Burial usually includes one of the following options:
- direct burial, which is a burial without a visitation (often called a wake) or funeral ceremony
- a visitation with a burial the same day
- a traditional funeral, which is a visitation with a burial the next day
Cremation is a process that respectfully turns a loved one’s remains into ashes after death. Their ashes can be kept in an urn, placed in a mausoleum, or scattered where permitted.
Families can also choose to bury their family member’s or friend’s ashes. This decision may be made in advance or by those making the arrangements.
Cremation can include
- A visitation before cremation
- A funeral or memorial service before or after cremation
- A combination of these services
With any burial or cremation option, families can create a personal and meaningful service to gather, remember, and honor someone they love.
