Hair Loss Awareness Month 🧬

Hair loss can have many different causes, and identifying the cause is an important part of finding the right treatment.

Androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, scarring alopecia, and traction alopecia can all cause hair loss, but they affect the hair follicles in different ways. Some forms may respond to medications or nutritional support, while others require treatment to control inflammation and protect the follicles from permanent damage.

In our latest blog, we break down the most common types of hair loss, what can cause them, how dermatologists evaluate hair and scalp changes, and the treatment options available.

We also discuss where Nutrafol may fit into a treatment plan for certain types of hair thinning.

Concerned about increased shedding or thinning? Start with finding out why it's happening.

Hair loss can be frustrating, especially when you don’t know why it’s happening.

One of the most important things to understand is that hair loss has many different causes, and the treatment depends on what is happening inside the hair follicle.

Androgenetic alopecia can cause gradual thinning and a widening part. Telogen effluvium can cause noticeable shedding several weeks or months after an illness, pregnancy, major weight change, or other physical stressor. Alopecia areata can cause sudden smooth patches. Some inflammatory conditions, including scarring alopecias, can permanently damage hair follicles if they aren’t treated early.

Your dermatologist can look at the pattern of hair loss, examine the scalp, and determine whether additional testing is appropriate.

Treatment may include topical or oral medications, treatment for an underlying medical condition, procedures such as PRP for selected patients, or nutritional support.

Nutrafol is also available at Koru Skin & Laser and may be appropriate for certain types of hair thinning as part of a broader treatment plan.

If you’ve noticed increased shedding, a widening part, thinning areas, or bald patches, don’t assume it’s simply part of getting older. The cause matters.

May is Skin Cancer & Melanoma Awareness Month ☀️

Living in Hawai‘i means year-round sun exposure — and in Kona, UV levels remain high even on cloudy days. Over time, cumulative UV damage increases the risk of premature aging, precancerous lesions, and skin cancer, including melanoma.

One of the most important things patients should know:
Skin cancer is often highly treatable when detected early.

Protecting your skin goes beyond beach days. Daily prevention matters:
✔ Broad-spectrum sunscreen
✔ Hats & sun-protective clothing
✔ Seeking shade during peak UV hours
✔ Yearly professional skin checks

Watch for warning signs like:
• changing moles
• spots that won’t heal
• lesions that bleed, itch, or continue evolving

Persistent facial redness is one of the most commonly overlooked signs of Rosacea.

Because rosacea can resemble acne or skin sensitivity, many patients spend years treating the wrong condition.

Without treatment, redness often becomes:
• more noticeable
• more frequent
• more difficult to control

Early diagnosis can make a significant difference.

If your skin has become increasingly red or reactive, call our office to schedule an appointment and discuss treatment options.

Persistent facial redness is often assumed to be sensitive skin, but it may be a sign of Rosacea.

Rosacea is a common inflammatory condition that can progress over time without appropriate treatment. Early diagnosis and a medically guided approach can help reduce symptoms and prevent long-term skin changes.

If you’re experiencing ongoing redness, visible blood vessels, or increased skin sensitivity, evaluation is recommended.
