I have something personal and professional to share:

Five years ago, on June 26, 2021, I was driving to work when I was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident.

I sustained a traumatic brain injury with a subdural hematoma, a skull fracture extending into my orbit, a cervical spine fracture requiring fusion, multiple rib fractures, thoracic fractures, and injuries to my right hand.

I spent time in the ICU and came very close to losing my life.

The injuries eventually healed, but some of the effects are still with me today.

My memory is not what it was before.

Stress affects me differently.

I fatigue differently.

I am more sensitive to overstimulation and large social environments.

Most people looking at me today would never know those things.

That's one of the challenges of brain injury. The scars people can't see are often the ones that last the longest.

Of all the things I remember from that time, the moment that stayed with me most wasn't a procedure or a diagnosis.

It was a blessing my husband gave me in the emergency room.

I was frightened.

I knew I had nearly died.

And for reasons I can't fully explain, I felt completely safe.

That experience changed me.

Not because it removed every challenge that followed, but because it taught me something I needed to learn: healing is physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual.

As a healthcare provider, I never forget that when I sit across from a patient.

Five years later, I still have memory gaps. I still have challenges. But I also have a deeper understanding of healing than I did before June 26, 2021. And that understanding shapes the way I care for my patients every day.
