Recovery is a journey no one takes alone.

To kick off Recovery Month, SEARHC’s canoe, Ancestral Echoes, traveled from Starrigavan Boat Launch to Crescent Harbor in Sitka. The journey was led by G**k du Éen (Dale Lindstrom), Dakl’aweidí of the Eagle Killerwhale Clan and SEARHC’s Cultural Healing Clinical Lead.

Ancestral Echoes was designed by Tlingit artist Weidaaka Yoodooha (Bill Pfeifer Jr.) (Formline Evolved) of the Chookaneidí Clan. The canoe’s formalize artwork tells a visual story of the Tlingit identity, resilience, and healing, to honor the ancestors who carried culture through difficult times and the living generation that continues moving forward.

Every canoe journey relies on many people working together, and so does recovery.

Asking for help is hard, especially when you’re in pain. Harry Bradley, Chemical Dependency Counselor II in Sitka, joined Martha Pearson, SEARHC Behavioral Health Program Director, on Raven Radio’s “Health Chat” to talk about recovery and why connection matters so much along the way.

Harry shares that recovery rarely happens in isolation. It happens with a counselor, a friend, a program, or a community that reminds you that you’re not carrying this by yourself.

Support is out there, and it starts with a conversation. If you or someone you know is struggling, we are here to help.

September is both National Recovery Month and Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and remind people that help and hope are available.

Alaska’s summer in a jar 🌸

When fireweed blooms, it’s the perfect time to make jelly. This recipe yields 4 four-ounce jars and captures the flavor and color of summer.

Ingredients:
- 8 cups fireweed petals (about 2 cups packed, rinsed)
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 packet pectin
- 3 cups sugar
- A small amount of butter (helps reduce foam)

Instructions:
1. Harvest fireweed blossoms responsibly, taking no more than 4 blooms from each plant.
Rinse the flowers thoroughly.
2. Place petals in a pot with enough water to cover them.
3. Boil until the flowers lose their color and turn gray.
4. Strain through cheesecloth.
5. Squeeze the petals in the cheesecloth to extract every last drop of juice. You should have about 2½ cups of fireweed juice. If you don’t have enough juice, add water until you reach 2½ cups.
6. Combine the fireweed juice, lemon juice, butter, and pectin in a pot.
7. Stir and bring to a boil.
8. Add sugar, stir, and return to a boil.
9. Sanitize your jars.
Tip: No canning rack? Extra jar lids work great for keeping jars off the bottom of the pot. Boil jars for 10 minutes.
10. Fill jars with jelly and seal.
11. Let sit for 24 hours to set.

Enjoy!

This is your sign to schedule your eye exam. 👁️ Appointments are available now. Call 907.463.0150 to schedule your eye care appointment today.

Ever wonder why our eye care team has you stare at that little hot air balloon?

Focusing on that image helps our autorefractor measure how your eyes focus, giving your provider important information about your vision, like identifying nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and provide a starting point for determining your prescription.

The machine shines light into your eye and measures how that light reflects back from the retina. Your provider uses those measurements as a starting point before refining your prescription during the rest of the eye exam.
