Today is World Sickle Cell Awareness Day – a time to raise awareness about this rare but serious, lifelong genetic blood disorder. At Bronson, about 120 people in our community rely on us for sickle cell care throughout every stage of life.

We’re proud to share that Bronson recently received an $80,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to help expand care, including additional nursing support, more education for care teams and improved access to coordinated, specialized services.

“About one in 13 African Americans carry the sickle cell trait, and many do not know it,” said Kirsten Bonifacio, PhD, lead pediatric psychologist at Bronson Children’s Hospital and principal investigator of Bronson's Sickle Cell Clinic Expansion and Enhancement Program. “Our goal is that any child who is born with sickle cell disease can receive their care at Bronson and that their care continues throughout their lifespan, right here in our own community. Ultimately, we want to keep growing Bronson’s program so more people affected by SCD can access the specialized care they deserve when they need it, to live healthier, fuller lives.”

Sickle cell disease can cause ongoing pain and other serious complications. But with the right care, people can live full lives. Today, we recognize those living with this condition and the importance of continued awareness and support.

Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the U.S. and reminds us why equity and access still matter today. As the region’s leading healthcare organization and largest employer, this work is ongoing and requires listening, building trust and helping ensure every person receives the care and support they need.

Tomorrow, Team Bronson will be out in the community celebrating and connecting. As proud sponsors of three local Juneteenth events, we’d love to see you there:
📍Battle Creek: Juneteenth Celebration (Claude Evans Park)
📍Kalamazoo: Rooted Juneteenth Celebration (Bronson Park)
📍South Haven: Boots on the Ground Celebration (Elkenburg Park)

Stop by, say hello and join us in honoring this important day.

"My parents homeschooled me in order to shield me from the world, and I had no idea I would turn out to be the type of person they were desperately trying to shield me from."

At a young age, Kathryn learned to hide who she truly was in order to fit the expectations placed around her. Since coming out at 19 years old, getting married and moving to Kalamazoo, she has navigated a long journey of self-acceptance while finding a community where she feels supported and able to fully be herself.

Nearly 1 in 4 lung scans find an abnormal result that may need follow-up. In times like this, getting answers quickly can make all the difference. This is why we’re now offering Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, an advanced, minimally invasive technology that helps diagnose lung conditions, including cancer, earlier.

By combining robotic precision with CT imaging, our pulmonology team can reach small, hard-to-access lung nodules with greater accuracy and help patients get answers sooner after an abnormal lung scan. For many patients, this means a faster diagnosis and a more reassuring experience.

Learn more about this advanced lung biopsy technology: https://www.bronsonhealth.com/news/bronson-ion-bronchoscopy/
