Understanding the five distinct stages of escalating stress before burnout occurs is key to your mental health.

The progression of stress, and the typical journey through it, begins with small acute reactions. But if not dealt with, can lead to eventual exhaustion.

1. Alarm
The initial reaction to a trigger. Your body releases stress hormones like cortisol, causing your heart rate to jump and mental alertness to increase. It is a short-term survival mechanism. This is where fight or flight happens and we make a choice to address it or not.

2. Resistance
When a stressor persists, your body tries to adapt and maintain a sense of normal. Damage control. You might push through fatigue, but your physical and emotional reserves slowly begin to deplete.

3. Recovery / Coping
This is the stage where you hopefully acknowledge the stress and actively intervene to restore balance. This involves employing practical strategies like meditation, prayer, talking to a friend or in a group, and seeking counsel from friends to help shift your perspective.

4. Adaptation
If you ignore the signs and fail to recover, your body "adapts" to functioning at a dangerously high baseline of stress. You might notice the strain through lower energy, sleep disturbances, irritability, or wobbling in your daily priorities.

5. Burnout
If the first four stages are ignored, you reach total burnout. This involves deep emotional, mental, and physical depletion that can impair your ability to work, relate to others, or maintain your emotional health.

Many people avoid getting treatment for mental health issues for fear of how others would look at them. The stigma applied to people who seek proper help has to stop.

NAMI has some tips on how to fight the stigma of mental health treatment.

* Talk openly about mental health, such as sharing on social media.
* Educate yourself and others – respond to misperceptions or negative comments by sharing facts and experiences.
* Be conscious of language – remind people that words matter.
* Encourage equality between physical and mental illness – draw comparisons to how they would treat someone with cancer or diabetes.
* Show compassion for those with mental illness.
* Be honest about treatment – normalize mental health treatment, just like other health care treatment.
* Let others know when they are using stigmatizing language or presenting stories of mental illness in a stigmatizing way.

You've heard of attachment, but what is it?

Attachment is the quality of the bond between you and your parents, siblings, spouse, children. It begins in your first family where you learned how to survive relationships, for good or bad.

You then take that relationship style with you into adulthood and into all kinds of new relationships that aren't like the ones you grew up with.

But you're still operating by those old rules, perhaps unconsciously.

If you need help deprogramming the old rules, and writing new ones in your relationships, give us a call today. 406-249-5506

I’ve been talking about this for over 20 years, and someone finally put a name on it.

I recently saw a post mentioning “Black Coffee Theory.” The theory is simple: If you walk into a coffee shop and say, “I don’t want black coffee,” what did the barista hear? Black coffee. And you haven’t told the barista what you actually want, so you will likely get… black coffee.

And that’s exactly how many people approach life.

We’re incredibly clear about what we don’t want:
“I don’t want to be anxious.”
“I don’t want a toxic relationship.”
“I don’t want to feel stuck.”

However, people rarely define the alternative with the same clarity. And that matters more than you might think.

I spent years saying to teenagers, “Stop telling me what you don’t want, and tell me what you do want.” It was amazing how often people would answer with, “I don’t know.”

Psychologically, the brain doesn’t process “don’t” the way we assume it does. When you focus on what you’re trying to avoid, your attention stays locked onto that very thing. Research in cognitive psychology shows that attempts to suppress thoughts can actually make them more persistent — the mind keeps circling back to them.

If your internal dialogue is, “I don’t want to be anxious,” your mind is still organizing around anxiety.

There’s a big difference between:
Avoidance-based thinking → “I don’t want to feel anxious.”
Approach-based thinking → “I want to feel calm, grounded, and in control.”

One keeps you oriented around the problem. The other gives your brain a direction. And direction is regulating.

In therapy, we see this all the time. People come in knowing exactly what they want to escape, but struggle to articulate what they want to build or create. That gap oftentimes creates stagnation, because you can’t move toward something that hasn’t been clearly defined.

Black Coffee Theory is really about clarity. It’s about shifting from, “What am I trying to avoid?” to “What am I actually trying to create?”

That shift changes behavior in subtle but powerful ways. It influences decisions, attention, and even emotional regulation. Small language changes produce different outcomes over time.

So instead of:
“I don’t want to be in another bad relationship,”
you might say:
“I want a relationship built on honesty, consistency, and mutual effort.”

Same person. Different focus.

And instead of:
“I don’t want to feel overwhelmed,”
you shift to:
“I want structure, clarity, and a manageable pace.”

Same life. Different orientation.

If you’re tired of ending up with the “black coffee” you didn’t want… it might be time to get a lot clearer about what you’re actually ordering. We can help. Call us today. 406-249-5506
