MHCM is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of adolescents, veterans, and women through unique equine-assisted experiences. HOW IT WORKS AND WHO IT SERVES
EQUINE ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY (EAP) is a rapidly growing field and showing significant improvements in the treatment of client’s symptoms. Our services specialize in working with clients suffering from trauma, recovering from sexual assault or domestic violence, as well as divorce recovery, depression and anxiety. EAP incorporates horses experientially for emotional growth and learning. It is a collaborative effort between a qualified mental health professional and a horse professional working with clients and horses to addresses treatment goals. Because of its intensity and effectiveness, it is considered a short term, or brief therapy approach. Our work has a different focus and intention than the Humans on Horseback program. Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is similar to EAP but where the focus is on learning or educational goals. EAL often called Hippotherapy which concentrates on a physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy treatment strategy that utilizes equine movement as part of an integrated intervention program to achieve functional outcomes. Equine movement provides multidimensional movement, which is variable, rhythmic and repetitive. Our understanding of how these disorders affects the brain and human physiology has increased exponentially in the last decade. The field of neuroscience has exploded our understanding of how of depression, anxiety and trauma impact humans both as a neurological and physiological processes has led to a significant increase in holistic and alternative approaches to therapeutic interventions. Current best practices for effective treatment protocols include somatic components, or body centered approaches, such as art therapy, equine therapy, or Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) that address the need to release trauma from the body alongside more traditional therapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy to help the client cope with the symptoms associated with trauma and other mental health disorders.

“I’m exhausted.”

I have been thinking about that sentence differently lately because I have been feeling it myself. Not ordinary tiredness after a long day of work. Not the familiar fatigue that follows several nights of poor sleep. I mean tired all the way down, the kind of exhaustion that seems to settle into the body and make even ordinary demands feel heavier than they should.

From theory to arena: ethical, science-informed equine-assisted practice that works in real life. For equine-assisted and mental health professionals working with horses and humans.

However, the role of a clinician has never been simply to provide information. People do not seek therapy because they lack access to facts. People do not seek therapy simply because they lack facts. Many clients arrive with years of searching, reading, watching, and trying to understand themselves. They often know quite a bit about their symptoms or possible explanations for what they are experiencing.

You may not be using artificial intelligence.

Your clients are.
They are asking ChatGPT whether they have ADHD. They are asking whether their symptoms sound like trauma, anxiety, depression, OCD, autism, or another mental health condition. They are asking whether their therapist’s interpretation makes sense. They are asking whether they should leave a relationship, stop a medication, disclose suicidal thoughts, or seek treatment.

When internal state is included in interpretation, behavior becomes more coherent rather than more complex.

The central question shifts from what behavior is occurring to what system state is present when that behavior emerges.

This adjustment strengthens welfare assessment, handling decisions, and session planning.

One of the most common activities in equine-assisted services involves asking a client to build an obstacle course. The client selects objects such as poles, cones, barrels, tarps, or gates and arranges them to represent challenges they are facing in their life. The horse is then asked to navigate the course while the client reflects on the meaning of each obstacle and their experience moving through it. https://thethinkingbarn.substack.com/
