💡 Why Do Extra Carbohydrates Make Weight Loss More Difficult?
Every time you eat carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, sweets, soda, and even fruit), your body breaks them down into glucose (sugar).
Your pancreas releases insulin, a hormone with one important job:
➡️ Move that sugar out of your bloodstream and into your cells.
Here’s what happens next:
✅ First, your body uses the glucose for energy.
✅ If there’s extra, it’s stored in your muscles and liver as glycogen (your body’s short-term energy storage).
✅ If those storage areas become full, the excess energy can be converted and stored as body fat.
Here’s the part many people don’t realize…
When insulin levels are elevated, your body isn’t very good at burning stored body fat. It focuses on using and storing the incoming fuel first.
This doesn’t mean carbohydrates are “bad.” Your body needs carbohydrates—but the amount matters.
For weight loss, many people do better by:
🥩 Prioritizing protein
🥦 Eating plenty of vegetables
🥜 Including healthy fats
🍞 Limiting excess refined carbohydrates and sugary drinks
Small changes in carbohydrate intake can make a big difference in hunger, insulin levels, and your body’s ability to burn stored fat.
At Healthy Medical, we help patients find an eating plan that works for their body—because there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
