βοΈποΈ SUMMER IS HERE! WATER SAFETY MATTERS. ππ
Summer season is here, and pools, lakes, rivers, and beaches are in high demand. Before you head out for a day of fun in the water, please take a few moments to review these important safety tips so your day doesn't end in tragedy.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children ages 1 to 4, and more than 4,000 unintentional drowning deaths occur in the United States each year, averaging approximately 11 deaths every day. Many of these tragedies are preventable through awareness, preparation, supervision, and water safety education.
π FLOAT TO STAY ALIVE
If you find yourself in trouble in the water:
1οΈβ£ Stay Calm
Panic uses energy and makes it harder to stay afloat. Focus on staying relaxed.
2οΈβ£ Lean Back
Tilt your head back and allow your ears to rest in the water. Relax your body.
3οΈβ£ Spread Out
Extend your arms and legs to help distribute your weight and increase buoyancy.
4οΈβ£ Control Your Breathing
Take slow, steady breaths and focus on conserving energy.
5οΈβ£ Signal for Help
Raise one arm and call out if help is nearby.
6οΈβ£ Conserve Energy
Avoid excessive kicking and splashing. Save your strength while waiting for assistance.
πΆ KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE AROUND WATER
β
Never leave a child unattended near water, even for a few seconds.
β
Designate a "Water Watcher" whose sole responsibility is supervising children in and around the water.
β
Keep children within arm's reach at pools, lakes, beaches, and splash pads.
β
Install four sided fencing with self latching gates around home swimming pools.
β
Enroll children in age appropriate swim lessons.
β
Have children wear properly fitted life jackets when boating or near open water.
β
Avoid distractions such as cell phones, conversations, or social media while supervising children.
β
Learn CPR. Immediate action can save a life while emergency responders are en route.
