Often the most powerful part of getting an ADHD diagnosis after years of struggling is finally understanding why you have struggled.

And then working to shift how you approach things from a different lens.

It isn’t magic, but even letting go of the shame around the struggle can feel huge.

For many BIPOC adult adults with ADHD, masking is not just trying to seem more focused, organized, or put together.

It can also mean, making sure your ADHD traits are not used to confirm someone else’s stereotypes about you.

•Overpreparing so you aren’t seen as incompetent.
• Monitoring tone so frustration is not labeled as aggression.
•Suppressing your energy, so you are not seen enough “too much.”
•Working twice as hard because you do not have the same freedom to be distracted, late, overwhelmed, or imperfect.

That is the weight of double masking: hiding parts of your ADHD while also navigating racism, respectability politics, and the pressure to remain palatable.

It may have helped you stay safe or protect your credibility, but it also can leave you exhausted, disconnected, constantly feeling like you have something to prove.

You deserve support to understand both your ADHD and your identity.

Mirah is accepting new clients across MO or in person in Kansas City.

his scenario is one which people who struggle with binge eating find themselves in frequently. It’s really easy to feel ashamed by this and that’s understandable. You’re probably thinking something like, “Why am I like this?” and “I cannot believe I just ate all that!”.

There are many personal reasons why this experience feels overwhelming and shameful. My experience has shown me that people who’ve done this can feel ashamed because they’re spending a lot of money on food and hiding it from those they care about. They already ate a meal, they’re not hungry, order and eat anyways; this can lead to feeling out of control.

Given how shameful and uncomfortable this experience can feel, some people may couch rot, disconnect from others, or simply stay in a place of dissociation. Why is this? Well, one way to think about these experiences are as a response to manage difficult emotional experiences.

The mind and body may be looking to move back into a state where your nervous system is regulated and one strategy for this may be to binge eat and dissociate. There’s much more to say about why and what could be done however, developing insight into episodes of binge eating and working on emotional regulation skills are two useful skills.

Please follow me for more information about eating disorders and their impacts.

You’ve spent years being the one who keeps everything running - the reliable one, the go-to, the person everyone can count on.

But that level of responsibility comes at a cost to your nervous system.

When you’re constantly scanning for what needs to be done, anticipating others’ needs, and jumping in before you even pause to ask if you want to, your body never really gets a break.

These small shifts aren’t about being less capable. They’re about letting your nervous system know you’re safe even when you’re not fixing, managing, or helping.
Because you deserve to feel calm and competent, not just useful. 💛

✨ If you’re ready to stop running on empty, our therapists help people pleasers and high-functioning professionals build lives that feel sustainable. Schedule a free intro call through the link in our bio.
