Most people probably think about wearing eye protection when w**d whacking or edging. This hyphema resulted from a rock while mowing the lawn. Fortunately vision is good at this point but time will tell whether this patient will have permanent damage to the eye and potential intraocular pressure issues. Encourage eye protection as people are back outside working on their lawn and landscaping projects.

Sometimes looking at our patients with cataracts requires slowing down and taking looks from different angles. Both of these patients had best corrected vision around 20/40. Just looking at the optic section of their lens, the nuclear sclerosis doesn’t look that bad. That’s when it can be helpful to look at the retro illuminated view of the lens. In each of these patients you can see central vacuoles or spokes in the visual axis that correlate with their visual complaint and reduced best corrected vision. It’s our job to try to connect the complaint, the vision and the clinic exam and make sure they all line jive when examining our patients.

Patient with very easy to see Vogt’s Striae in his eye came in during one of his Corneal Cross-Linking followups on his other eye. Recall these are common vertical striae in the posterior corner of nearly 65% of patients with keratoconus. These are usually seen in patients with more advanced keratonconus.

This is a 1 week pterygium removal postop performed by Dr. Boyce. I’ve included the preop pic and several postop pics. After removal of the pterygium, a section of superior conjunctiva is removed and glued in place where the pterygium was. This has shown to be an excellent way to reduce the return of the pterygium. For several weeks the conjunctival graft will look inflamed and swollen. This is normal. Around 2 months postop things will look much better and usually by 3-4 months it will be hard to see that a pterygium was ever present before. This technique of using a conjunctival graft has been a major improvement in pterygium surgery. I’ll post a picture down the line when everything is healed up.
