What Connects Then to Now

The nervous system
The body stored the original experience as a threat pattern and continues to respond to anything that resembles it as though the original threat is still present.

The belief system
The child made meaning of what happened and that meaning became a core belief about themselves, others, and the world that now runs automatically beneath every relationship.

The adaptation
The behavior that helped the child survive is now the behavior running in adult relationships where the threat is gone but the strategy remains, costing the person the very connection they most need.

This is what people mean when they say trauma lives in the body. Not that you spend your days thinking about what happened. Not that you're stuck in the past in any conscious way. But that your nervous system stores the emotional reality of what you lived through and continues to use it as a reference point for every experience that follows.

Understanding where your patterns came from doesn't require you to assign blame. It requires something more difficult: the honest recognition that what happened left a mark. That the mark is specific. That it shows up in specific ways. And that it can, with the right support, the right work, enough safe experience, gradually change.

Some celebrities collect luxury homes. Dolly Parton collects proof that having money doesn’t require losing your soul.

Dolly’s highlight reel of good deeds:

In 1988, she created the Dollywood Foundation in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee, to tackle high-school dropout rates. Through the Buddy Program, she promised $500 to seventh- and eighth-graders who graduated. The dropout rate for those classes fell from 35% to 6%. Imagine: a billionaire-in-waiting investing in kids instead of pretending teachers are the problem.

In 1989, she offered a $500 scholarship to every Sevier County student who wanted to attend Hiwassee College. Education should be a right, but Dolly has spent decades making it a little more reachable anyway.
In 1991, she helped establish Dollywood’s Eagle Mountain Sanctuary with the American Eagle Foundation—a 30,000-square-foot haven for non-releasable bald eagles. Conservation, but make it rhinestones.

In 1995, she launched the Imagination Library, mailing free books to children from birth until they start school in participating communities. It has since grown far beyond her hometown and now serves families across the U.S. and several other countries.

In 2020, as COVID spread, Dolly donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s research effort—funding that contributed to the work behind Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.

Dolly Parton didn’t wait for a tax break, a branding consultant, or a congressional hearing to do the right thing. She just saw needs—kids needing books, students needing opportunity, animals needing care, scientists needing resources—and showed up.

More billionaires should try it.

Remember, it takes practice—be patient with yourself and don’t give up if you find it challenging at first.

Learn about EFT tapping, how to do it, and whether it helps with depression, phobias, and PTSD.
