This Juneteenth, we would like to highlight the work and activism of Opal Lee, which led Juneteenth to be recognized as a federal holiday.

At 89 years old (in 2016), Ms. Opal Lee began her walking campaign “Opal’s Walk 2 DC” to bring attention to the need for Juneteenth to be a National Day of Observance. With 47 states that officially recognized it as a holiday, she believed it was time for national legislation.

Starting in Fort Worth, Texas, she walked 2.5 miles, representing the years it took for the enforcement of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation to reach Texas and free the enslaved people there. She walked in 14 states, including Washington, D.C. She relaunched her campaign in 2019 and covered 7 states before the pandemic disrupted the campaign.

On June 17, 2021, Juneteenth, or June 19, was made the 12th federal holiday.

This week we are shining the spotlight on Wendy Carlos.

She is an American composer for films and is known for her electronic music. Carlos gained recognition for her album Switched On Bach (1968) which featured the traditional compositions performed on a Moog synthesizer. She won three Grammy for the album and was the first openly transgender woman to win a Grammy. She is also known for her film scores for A Clockwork Orange (1971), The Shining (1980), and for Tron (1982).
