Advancements in Robotic Joint Technology for Replacement Surgery

Why robotic precision is changing the conversation around joint replacement: I explain how 3D preoperative imaging and real‑time robotic guidance let us build personalized surgical plans and place implants with sub-millimeter accuracy. That precision helps reduce tissue trauma, improves alignment, and can support faster recovery and longer implant life.

As a specialist in robotic hip and knee replacement in the Kansas City area, I focus on using these tools to deliver patient‑centered care and better outcomes. Technology gives us greater control in the OR, but surgeon experience remains critical.

It was great teaching and training fellow orthopedic surgeons in the world of Mako Robotic total hip and knee replacement.
This course brought together many surgeons from different backgrounds. The surgeons I had the pleasure of working with were 2 orthopedic surgeons recently out of fellowship and preparing to enter practice, along with two surgeons from Brazil to become certified in Mako robotic total joint arthroplasty.

One of the most rewarding parts of being faculty is sharing techniques and experience with surgeons who are eager to bring the latest technology and advancements in joint replacement to their patients. Just as importantly, I loved hearing about their experiences and learning more about orthopedic surgery and healthcare in Brazil.

Teaching the next generation of joint replacement surgeons—and learning from each other along the way—is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Proud to be part of a group of surgeons dedicated to advancing robotic total hip and knee replacement around the world.

Is the Subvastus approach right for you?? The subvastus approach is a muscle‑sparing technique for total knee replacement that preserves the quadriceps, reduces early postoperative pain, and often shortens recovery time. I discuss how robotic assistance can complement this approach and who makes a good candidate. Read more on our site and ask questions - I’m here to help. 🩺🤔

I had an incredible time last weekend serving on the faculty for the Annual Fellows MAKO Certification Course. It was an honor to be part of such an impressive group of surgeons, bringing decades of experience and expertise together to teach and mentor the next generation of orthopedic surgeons.

Watching these fellows gain hands-on experience with MAKO robotic technology for total hip and knee replacement was incredibly rewarding. Giving them the knowledge, skills, and confidence to incorporate this advanced technology into their future practices is exactly what education and mentorship are all about.

Proud to be part of a faculty committed to advancing orthopedic education and helping shape the future of joint replacement.

🔪 🔨 What happens to surgical instruments after they’re cleaned?

Welcome to Part 2 of our behind-the-scenes look at sterile processing with Kisha

After the instruments are carefully hand washed and then cleaned in a specialized medical washer, the process is far from over.

First, every instrument is inspected to make sure it’s completely clean and functioning properly.

Next, the instruments are thoroughly dried and organized into surgical trays.

Finally, they’re placed into the autoclave sterilizer, where high-pressure steam is used to sterilize the instruments. These cycles can reach temperatures of up to 275°F and pressures of approximately 30 psi.

Only after completing the sterilization cycle are the instruments ready to be used for the next surgery.

There is an incredible amount of work that happens behind the scenes to keep patients safe. Sterile processing is truly one of the most important—and often overlooked—parts of the surgical team.

Huge thank you to Kisha for giving us an inside look! 👏

🩺 In my blog post “Minimally Invasive Surgery Benefits: Exploring Modern Techniques in Total Joint Replacement,” I explain how muscle-sparing approaches, smaller incisions, and robotic assistance can make hip and knee replacement less disruptive - not just in outcome, but during recovery. Direct anterior total hip replacement and the subvastus total knee approach avoid cutting major muscles, which helps preserve strength and speed recovery. Robotic-assisted surgery improves implant placement and alignment, and I close incisions with a plastic-surgeon-style technique (stitches under the skin and glue on top) to support better cosmetic results. Patients often experience less postoperative pain, go home the same day, and an earlier return to walking and physical therapy. Read the full post to learn which techniques may apply to your case and what to ask your surgeon. Tell me: what concerns about surgery would you like answered?

Ever wonder what happens to your surgical instruments before your total joint replacement?

Kisha at Blue River Surgery Center is giving us an inside look at what I consider one of the most important jobs in the entire surgery center.

Every instrument used in the operating room goes through a meticulous sterilization process designed to keep patients safe. It starts with a specialized medical washer that removes blood, tissue, and microscopic debris using high-pressure water, detergents, and carefully controlled cycles. After a thorough inspection, the instruments are packaged and placed into an autoclave, where high-pressure steam sterilizes every instrument before it’s used in surgery.

This process is repeated after every single case—no shortcuts, no exceptions.

Patient safety doesn’t begin when the incision is made. It starts long before you enter the operating room, with an entire team dedicated to ensuring every instrument is perfectly clean and sterile.

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes before surgery? Let me know what you’d like to see next! Stay tuned for part 2!

When bone loss makes a standard replacement impossible, customization matters.

Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty has become an incredible option for patients with severe shoulder arthritis, rotator cuff dysfunction, or complex shoulder damage.
But when there is significant bone loss, a standard implant may not provide the stability or fixation we need.

That’s where 3D CT-based planning and custom implants can make a major difference.
- A detailed 3D reconstruction of the patient’s anatomy
- Precise planning around areas of bone loss
- Custom implant design when standard components aren’t enough
- Patient-specific reconstruction designed to optimize fixation and stability

This is where orthopedic surgery meets advanced technology—building the solution around the patient’s anatomy rather than forcing the anatomy to fit the implant.
Every shoulder is different. Complex problems require complex planning.
