KU School of Medicine faculty members are among the group of exceptional educators being recognized during KU Athletics events through the Spotlight on Faculty Excellence program. Established by the KU Office of Faculty Affairs, the program brings academics and athletics together in celebration of faculty members and their contributions in research, scholarship and creative activity. After becoming the first graduate of KU School of Medicine-Wichita’s addiction medicine fellowship, Luke Rosebraugh, M.D., is embarking on another first as the Hutchinson area’s first full-time addiction medicine specialist.

Dr. Rosebraugh, who completed the one-year fellowship in June, hopes to help expand addiction care across the region.

"Hutchinson, I think, has a lot of unique features that make it a good place to start,” said Dr. Rosebraugh. “There are already people who are interested in doing similar things, like expanding addiction treatment to surrounding counties."

Last month, alumni from KU School of Medicine gathered in Kansas City for a special event after the Class of 2030 White Coat Ceremony. Hosted by Andrew Pirotte, M.D.'11, associate dean for Special Programs and Alumni Engagement, the event brought alumni together to reunite and reconnect.

Eleanor Leavens, Ph.D., assistant professor of population health and a member of The University of Kansas Cancer Center's Cancer Prevention and Control research program, is providing the first clinical recommendations in the United States on how e‑cigarettes can be used to help adults quit smoking.

Developed by the Harm Reduction Workgroup of the Society for Research on Ni****ne and To***co and published in JAMA, the guidance is expected to influence national treatment standards and reshape how clinicians support people who smoke.

“Adding clear guidance on e‑cigarettes gives clinicians a practical tool that can help people move away from combustible to***co and toward better health," said Dr. Leavens.

Findings led by KU Cancer Center researcher address a long-standing gap in smoking-cessation treatment

In collaboration with NASA Ames Research Center, Lane Christenson, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, led a study examining how spaceflight affects female fertility. The study, conducted aboard the International Space Station, focused on mouse fertility and changes in offspring behavior, growth and physiology.

The findings offer important insights as human space exploration and space tourism continue to expand, highlighting the need to understand the long-term health effects of spaceflight.

“It is absolutely important that astronauts and tourists know the long-term effects of spaceflight before they go,” Dr. Christenson said.

Study conducted on the International Space Station, and led by investigators at KU Medical Center and NASA’s Ames Research Center, raises concerns about spaceflight’s potential risks.

To mark the 60th anniversary of the KU School of Medicine's Department of Anesthesiology, the Clendening History of Medicine Library and Museum has a special exhibit on display about the history of anesthesia.

“Anecdotes in Anesthesia” tells the story of 120 years of anesthesia through artifacts narratives about historical figures. Visitors can explore the exhibit until Oct. 16, located on the first floor of the Robinson Building on the KU Medical Center campus in Kansas City. Learn more:

At KU School of Medicine, the state-of-the-art anatomy lab gives first- and second-year medical students experiences far beyond what a textbook can provide. Through human cadaver dissection, students develop the skills, empathy and resilience that will define their careers.

Each donor becomes an irreplaceable teacher, offering students the privilege of learning through hands-on experience with real human tissue, variation and complexity.

“This donor’s final act was not just a gift to me,” said Morgan Bretches, a third-year medical student at KU School of Medicine-Wichita. “It was a reminder of what medicine must be: a practice rooted not just in science but in grace, in the willingness to show up for others even when we have nothing left to offer but ourselves.”
