In Episode 4, we meet Ailecia Joy Ruscin, owner of Oh Snap! Photography & longtime community activist & scholar, and raising funds for Jubilee Cafe.
Oh Snap! Photography is an award-winning lifestyle photography company owned by a LGBTQIA+ woman with a masterβs degree in American & Cultural Studies and a background in film photography from Pittsburgh Filmmakers. Raised in all parts of the South--Alabama, Texas, Georgia--and coming out as q***r in the mid-1990s Ailecia brings a unique cultural lens to her photographic approach that focuses on and appreciates diversity and intersectionality.
Just like Jubilee Cafe, who believes in serving people with dignity, Ailecia approaches each client with accessibility and dignity, believing that each client brings a specific set of needs in understanding how they will best be photographed, respected and understood. Ailecia loves serving a diverse client base and loves photographing gender non-conforming people, LGBTQIA+ couples & families, and clients with unique needs like families with neurodivergent kids & teens, people within spiritual and religious minorities, immigrant families, polyamorous relationships, and families with foster children. Oh Snap! has documented over 400 couples for their weddings and commitment ceremonies and annually works with dozens of professional headshot clients, college graduates, high school seniors, nonprofits, small businesses and corporations.
Her favorite assignments are documenting within the LGBQTIA+ community and Chabad Jewish community--two disparate communities who focus on living life full of joy, love, and light. Trained in oral history at KU, Berkeley & Columbia, Ailecia is also a community oral historian, helping families interview each other to preserve their history for generations to come.
