Nine of us headed out for Walking Club today and covered 5.54 km through the Westside and downtown KC.

We wandered north through the neighborhood toward 12th Street, stopped at Spokes Coffee Cafe for a beverage break, then made our way south on Broadway — where we naturally had to pause at Turnsol Books to admire a glorious shop cat in repose.

Overcast skies, about 72°, good conversation, a little exploring, and absolutely no need to be the fastest person in the group.

That’s pretty much what a Monday walk with us looks like.

Some weeks we discover a new street. Some weeks we stop for coffee. Sometimes there’s a cat. The point is simply to get outside, move a little, meet people, and enjoy Kansas City on foot.

One of my longtime favorite Kansas City businesses: Index Restaurant Supply at 521 Main.

I first got to know restaurant supply stores during my years working in food service, but you definitely don’t have to work in a professional kitchen to appreciate this place. Index is open to the public and is full of sturdy, useful, well-made tools for anyone who cooks at home.

And yes — restaurant supply actually overlaps quite nicely with what we do at Solaris. We’re big believers in using the right tool for the job. In massage, that means drawing on specialized training and techniques to tailor the work to what each client needs that day. In the kitchen, the right tools make good work easier, too. And because fitness is one of our pillars, anything that makes meal prep and good nutrition more practical gets our vote.

I swung by today for a few more bulk food containers…and couldn’t resist one of the new Index ball caps.

Today's walk was special because we had a new walker who grew up on the Westside! She shared so many memories of people, places, and things from the past. We walked deep into the neighborhood, up the hills past Observation Park, and then down the steep descent near the Tony Aguirre Community Center. We'll do it again next Monday at 1, so join us if you can. We meet at the shop!
